FIFA World Cup 2010: Italy stunned by on fire New Zealand
Shocking upsets have now seemed to have become part of the FIFA World Cup 2010, being played in South Africa. Going into the game one cannot predict who the eventual winner or what the result would be, since so far everything on the field has gone against plan and favourite teams look hankered and scattered on the fields of soccer.
Another example of this very notion was seen yesterday when the Italians took on their weaker opponents New Zealand. Before this match the same analysis and commentary followed as before any match, when a super star team takes on a minnow. Pre match analysis seemed to be so that Italy should easily beat the men from New Zealand and thus comfortably progress into the final 16.
The Italians came in to the match having won against Paraguay and requiring as well as expecting a win against New Zealand to secure their qualification to the next round.
However what happened at the match was just in continuation of the shocks that fans seem to be getting used to now. Team New Zealand managed to have a dream match, as they achieved their greatest football result yesterday after managing to draw against the stylish and defending champions Italy 1-1.
In the interesting events of the game the New Zealanders were the first to score and then were in a dominant position for some time. However, a mistake on part of the New Zealander gave the mighty Italians a penalty kick, which they obviously took advantage of and thus leveled the score line.
These were the only goals of the match, as after this despite the whole of the second half the New Zealander displayed some excellent attack and defense to deny the Italians their expected victory.
The draw now puts both Italy and New Zealand on two points each and with just one match remaining in the first round now. The Kiwis will next take on the group leaders Paraguay, while the Italians have a great chance on winning and going through as they play Slovakia on Thursday who are at the bottom of the table.
