FIFA World Cup 2010: Manchester City manager backs Fabio Capello
England’s Italian manager Fabio Capello has come under fire from all media sources after the English national teams disappointing World Cup campaign. England came to the World Cup as favorites and flattered to deceive as they failed to even progress past the round of sixteen.
Fabio Capello, who took charge of the English national team on 14th of December 2007, was expected to at least take England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa. Capello’s appointment for England came at the back of the English national team’s failure to qualify for the European Championships of 2007.
After England’s failure to impress at the World Cup, Fabio Capello’s future as the English manager has remained under threat. However, recently F.A came out and announced that Capello will be retained as the manager of the English national team till the year 2012. It is also important to note that the next UEFA Euro championships take place in 2012.
Fabio Capello’s past track record has been impressive. In club football he has managed several big clubs such as Real Madrid, A.C Milan and Juventus. Capello’s A.C Milan side was one of the most feared clubs in Europe. In a total of 170 games that they played under Capello’s management from 1991-1996, they only lost 16 games, Capello also managed Roma in the Serie A and succeeded with the club as they won their first Italian league title in 2001.
Recently Manchester City’s Italian manager, Roberto Mancini has come out in the media and backed Capello to succeed with the English national team. He said that the main reason for the English team’s failure at the World Cup was the lack of resting and recuperating time given to the players throughout the league season. Mancini remarked that English players play too much football throughout the league season. He explained that Capello had already said the same thing as well as, Svenson Goran Erickson who was England’s manager for the 2006 World Cup.
Mancini also added that Capello is the best coach for the English national team as he is creating a solid basis for the national squad. He also commented that introducing a winter break concept into the English league season would be successful.
Other leagues such as the German football league and the Spanish football league already have a winter break. The break which commences from the 25th of December and goes on till mid January, allowing players to rest and recover from any small injuries that they might have. This helps the players when they come to international tournaments in the summer, as they are not suffering from extensive fatigue.
The Italian manager who is currently in charge at Manchester City said that he could understand the disappointment but it was not doom and gloom for the English. He also commented on the disallowed Frank Lampard goal and said that it should have been a goal. He said that the goal changed everything in the round of sixteen match against Germany, England would have dominated the match.
