They were paired up in the dangerous Group H along with Spain, Honduras and Switzerland.
Honduras was considered to be a good team, they even performed their mettle but sadly, their opponents were too tough for them to beat. Switzerland has impressed many football fans with their defence. They have one of the best defence strategies in this years’ World Cup, with a record of five hundred and fifty minutes without conceding a goal. Italy on the other hand was knocked out of the World Cup only yesterday by Slovakia. Meanwhile, Switzerland made one of the biggest upsets of the World Cup by beating Spain in their first group match. Although the Spanish side kept a majority of the ball possession, they could not find the net. On a thunderous counter attack, the Swiss managed to score a goal. Later, they were able to defend their lead and did not concede any goal. Conditions are ripe for Spain to grab a win against Chile, or they will be knocked out of the World Cup. If Spain, the European Champions, is knocked out of the World Cup, it will be another huge upset, comparable to the exits faced by France and Italy.
Chile, for now, is still unbeaten with six points while Spain has three points and so does Switzerland. Honduras on the other hand is still without a point but if they can grab a win over Switzerland and Spain loses to Chile, then everything will come down to goal difference, and one of them would be knocked out of the World Cup. For now, Chile has the best goal difference in the group followed by Spain.
Switzerland is looking for a win as well. If they manage to come to equal terms with Spain on points, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded, then the Spaniards will be knocked out of the World Cup because of the fact that the Swiss have beaten the Spanish side. The Spanish side were considered to be favourites in Group H but right now, they are stuck because they lost their first match to the well organized Swiss side.
The Spanish side has great ball control, but their forward Fernando Torres has totally failed to impress by missing many chances from inside of the box. Though, his partner, David Villa has been playing tremendously well. Although he missed a penalty kick during a match against Honduras but he still managed to score two goals. The first goal was struck fabulously into the top right corner right after he dribbled between two Honduras’ defenders and shot the ball while he was sliding.
The Spain versus Chile can seriously affect the final result of Group H. Reason being the fact that the Spanish side is on level terms with the Swiss side, and if they beat Chile and the Swiss beat Honduras, then all three teams will be on level terms. In that case, everything will come down to goal difference. Today is an exciting day for this World Cup. Group H is a very open group and anything can happen considering what has happened till now. The prospects of the Spanish side being knocked out from South Africa 2010 can cause another huge upset for fans across the globe.
