FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa: Demichelis has a go at John Terry

Things have been reaching boiling point before Argentina’s quarter final tie against Germany, which is a replay of their semi-final match four years ago in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Yesterday, Schweinsteiger had a lot to say about Argentinean fans and their demeanor as a whole.

He also spoke on length about referees and possible penalties or fouls. The Bayern Munich midfielder also spoke to the press about Lionel Messi and how the Germans might counter his threat, he assured everyone that it was not their “game” to foul on purpose and injure players.

Maradona had his comeback as well, saying that Schweinsteiger is a young player and all of this talk about referees, fans and penalties from his side makes it look like he is nervous because Argentina are capable of beating Germany.

Now in the latest twist to the tale, Martin Demichelis has had a go at John Terry, the former English team captain. John Terry’s mistakes led to two goals for Germany in their round of sixteen tie. The Chelsea captain was criticized heavily by all sorts of media outlets and pundits alike.

His lack of pace, lack of judgment and absence of composure on the ball led to the mistakes. Something that Demichelis thinks is unacceptable from a proper central defender.

To say the least, it is surprising that Demichelis has been the one who has taken up this crusade against John Terry, when Martin’s own form has not been impressive. His lack of concentration led towards South Korea’s goal against Argentina in their group stage match. He has come in severe criticism for his weak performance against Mexico as well.

His performance for Bayern Munich against Inter Milan in the Champions League final was also condemned heavily as he failed to deal with the threat of Samuel Eto’ and Diego Milito. After Argentina’s latest training session in Pretoria, Demichelis was asked about his poor form and the Argentinean center back responded by highlighted Terry’s recent performance against the Germans at Bloemfontein in South Africa.

The center back went on to say that if he performed as bad as Terry in Argentina’s quarterfinal tie against the Germans on Saturday, he will not even be allowed to go back home. These were some strong remarks from the Argentinean man, as the war of words between the Argentinean camp and the Germans continues.

He also made it clear that he is not someone who takes pleasure in taking criticism or reading it. He explicitly stated that he is not a “m*******t” and also explained that he does not read everything written about himself in the news papers.

There has been a lot of talk before the game that Argentina’s weakness lies in their defense and that they have not yet been truly tested by a good football side. Demichelis has been targeted out as one of the weak men in the Argentinean squad, someone who is prone to committing errors in crucial games.

Martin Demichelis said that he is aware of these views but he is a strong person and can overcome such problems to perform better. There were other cheap shots taken towards the English camp as well, such as when the German captain Phillip Lahm made it clear that they have got the capacity to beat a top level team like Argentina.

He also said that Argentina, Brazil and Spain are all bigger teams than England. These comments will only add insult to injury that the English have already suffered by getting knocked out already by the Germans in the round of sixteen.

The match between Argentina and Germany in the quarter finals will decide who will play the winner of Spain and Paraguay match which will take place on Saturday. Spain look as favorites for that match whereas Argentina and Germany are evenly balanced as the World Cup enters its most crucial stage.
