FIFA World Cup 2010: Stars of the World Cup
The FIFA World Cup 2010 has come to a close. Over the course of the tournament people witnessed some great goals, some terrible tackles and some really bad refereeing decisions. But there were some people who out shone the others, here’s taking a look at them.
Diego Forlan, the Golden Ball winner, has probably managed to make every single list of what was good at the World Cup. He played brilliantly throughout the tournament and displayed some of the best attacking football ever seen. He managed to drag an average team all the way to the fourth spot at the tournament and while everyone was complaining about how bad the Jubalani was, Forlan was scoring one goal after the other.
Diego Maradona was a treat to watch. He was by far the most entertaining character to watch at the World Cup, whether it was him smoking a cigar at practice or being highly animated on the sidelines, he was like a magnet for the media. The fact that he managed to steer Argentina all the way to the quarter finals was also impressive.
Thomas Muller surprised everyone. No one expected the twenty year old to perform even half as good as he did. He managed to take home the Golden Boot and the Young player of the tournament award. He displayed composure and confidence way beyond his years. His importance was felt by the German squad against their match with Spain, in which Muller didn’t participate due to a one match suspension. Germany went on to lose to the eventual World Cup winners in that game.
David Villa might have not had the best match at the World Cup final, but Spain wouldn’t have managed to make it to the final without the goals that Villa scored. Fernando Torres didn’t really offer him much help, so the striker knew he had to do it all on his own and that’s exactly what he did. He managed to score five crucial goals, most of which came in the one nil wins, which just proves how important they were.
Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal in the World Cup final. That is possibly the greatest honor a footballer can hope to achieve. Iniesta started off slow, but as the tournament progressed his came into his own. He was constantly looking for a gap in the opposition defense and was constantly using his imagination while playing the ball. He was a treat for fans to watch.
The World Cup is South Africa had some of the best crowds that the tournament could have asked for. The crowd was noisy, entertaining, colorful and energetic. Every time a match got dull or boring the crowd managed to liven the mood in the arena. The South African fans did a wonderful job at showcasing the countries love for the sport.
Lastly, Paul. Paul the octopus is someone, no one is going to forget about in a while. An octopus that can predict World Cup matches, was never seen before and probably never will be seen again.
