FIFA World Cup 2010: The Worst Awards
The dust has settled on the World Cup, the Spanish have taken home the crown and become the eighth nation to lift the trophy. After a month of celebrations, South Africa has returned to its normal self. Here are some of the worst’s that will be remembered from the World Cup
The worst referee at the tournament was by far, Mali national, Koman Coulibaly. He made some of the worst calls possible in the game between U.S.A and Slovenia. The worst decision however was when the referee disallowed Edu’s goal for reasons only known to him. The replays showed there was nothing wrong with the goal, the linesmen saw nothing wrong with it either, but the referee didn’t even hesitate before disallowing it.
The worst by a goal keeper, is easily Robert Green’s outstanding effort against the howler from Robert Dempsey. The West Ham number one was standing on his line as a ball rolled its way into his hands then it somehow managed to be magically pulled out of them and went into the goal. The crowd and the players couldn’t understand how the ball rolled in. The only logical explanation that comes to mind is the Dempsey is in fact a jedi, because if he isn’t then that is one of the most retarded displays of goal keeping ever witnessed by mankind.
Luis Suarez performed quite possibly one of the worst acts ever committed by a player during a game. He deliberately stuck his arms out to deny Ghana a last minute goal that would see them through to the semi finals. Had Suarez been the goal keeper it would have been one of the best saves ever seen in the World Cup, but considering he was in fact at that moment playing as the striker, this act should have been penalized and the player should have been banned for a much longer period of time.
The worst red card that a player managed to win, was Felipe Melo’s perfectly timed stomp on Robben who at that time was on the floor and nowhere near the ball. Not only did he contribute to Netherlands first goal, but he managed to get a red card and see the ten man Brazil eventually lose out to the Dutch. In his defense he might be planning a future move to Netherlands and was maybe hoping this act would make it easier to immigrate there.
If you are open in front of the goal about three yards from the goal line and your team is one goal down, most people would think this is the perfect moment to score. Well if you are Yakubu, you would think otherwise, he managed to miss from three yards out when Nigeria were trailing South Korea two goals to one. This miss ultimately led to Nigeria loosing the match. This miss was infact so historic that the Oxford dictionary added the word Yakubu to it with the following definition, "To utterly squander once-in-a-lifetime opportunities especially one that will cause pain to millions of people; or to fail awfully at a very easy and uncomplicated assignment."
