FIFA World Cup 2010: Top storylines leading up to Germany vs. Spain

Spain have lost only two of their last thirty five games, this record had made them favorites going in to the World Cup. Germany on the other hand became over night favorites after demolishing two of the best teams in the world in the shape of Argentina and England. Most people would agree that the semi final match between these two teams will be one of the greatest in World Cup history.

There are a few stories that have developed on course to this match, making it even more significant than it already was scheduled to be. First of all one of the greatest honors of the World Cup is the top scorer award. Two of the biggest contenders for this award will be playing on opposite sides. David Villa has scored five goals already and doesn’t look like he's going to be stopping any time soon. Klose has four goals to his name so far and for him it’s just not the golden boot that’s up for grabs it’s a place in the record books.

Klose needs just one more goal to tie the record with most goals scored at the World Cup finals. The current holder of that record with fourteen goals is the Brazilian legend Ronaldo. The German could easily score that goal, with the flare and finishing touch that he possesses hardly anyone would be betting against him.

Spain are known throughout history to be the greatest underachievers in footballing history. Despite the fact that they have some of the greatest players in the world they have failed to make an impact in the World Cup. They are now going to face Germany in the first ever semi final in the team’s history. They will be giving it their all just to prove their critics wrong.

If Spain manage to pull off a win against the Germans they will then face Netherlands in the final to decide who will take home the trophy. If that happens it would ensure that there would be a new winner, someone who has never lifted the trophy before. Both Spain and Netherlands have been trying to break the barrier for a while now and it seems its either now or never for both these sides.

When Spain won the Euro 2008, they proved that the Spanish were no longer the underachievers that they had been labeled to be for so long. Right after that win they were considered to be immediate favorites for the World Cup. They beat a German side that even then most people said wouldn’t make it far in the tournament. But those people were eating their words when that German side went on all the way to the final match of the tournament. Germany will have a chance at redemption, having suffered a loss at the hands of the Spanish in the finals of that tournament.

All in all this game will be one highly contested match between both the teams and whatever the outcome of the game is, it will still be a sporting spectacle to watch.
