FIFA World Cup 2010 “let us play the final” plea from Torres and Fabregas
It is perhaps disappointing if not humorous that two of the biggest names from the Premier League, request their coach to let them play in the FIFA World Cup final. Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres both were forced to sit on the sidelines as their team won the semi final against Germany.
Torres has been given more chances to prove himself, having played 4 matches for his side and failing to score. He has had a lot of opportunities in front of goal, but never looked like the player who has been formidable for his club whenever he was fit to play.
There are rumours that David Villa may not be able to start as he may be suffering from a dead leg. This may well be like in Euro 2008, where Villa was injured to start the final. Here, Torres stepped up and scored the winning goal, crowing them the European Champions. Torres is reported to ask the manager to play him in the final, and vowed that he will not disappoint if given the chance to play in the final. Torres is expected to start as he has looked sharper than he was in the previous starts. He came on as a substitute in the semi final, and looked better than he was in the start of the tournament.
Fabregas on the other hand, is frustrated with the lack of opportunities he has had in the Cup, and hopes to play “some part” in the final. The Spain number 10 has been seen cheering for his side from the sidelines, while his Spanish counterparts are having the time of their lives on the field. He is yet to start a single game, and was unavailable in the semi final owing to his shoulder and knee injuries suffered in the Paraguay game. The Arsenal captain confirmed that he is hurt for not playing for his team, and he was sad for at not being in the starting XI for any of the matches. He however commended his side for reaching the final and praised his midfielders who are of top quality. He stated that he was honoured to be a part of such a splendid side, but hoped that he can perhaps play some part to help win the first World Cup for his country. He added that if he lucky enough to play in the match, he will give his all, and if he was on the bench, he will pray and hope that he plays some part in the match and play the final.
Fabregas has been a part of transfer saga all this summer, between his current club Arsenal and boyhood club Barcelona. Barcelona are admirers of the player but Fabregas is most likely to stay at Arsenal. This can be evident when he looks forward to meeting his team mate Van Persie in the final. He stated that he has been texting the Dutch and added that they both knew that if they were to ever face each other in the World Cup, it would be in the final. He stated that they joked about it in the earlier half of the tournament, and now that it has come true, its truly unbelievable.
He felt that it was good for Arsenal as a club that two of its players were in the final, although it may feel weird as well. Arsenal are already training for the new season in the Premier League, while two of its key players are still at South Africa, trying to win the most coveted trophy. Fabregas and Van Persie enjoy a good relationship with each other, and have nothing but respect for each other
"I know where I prefer to be and I'm sure that goes for Robin, too. He's a great player and very dangerous”, claimed the Arsenal Captain.
