FIFA World Cup 2010 update-Brazil whips Chile 3-0; Full time report
Brazil completed a comprehensive 3 nil win against their South American neighbours Chile in the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2010, to make their way in the quarter finals where they will face Netherlands. Juan, Fabiano and Robinho were on the score sheet as Brazil continued their pursuit of a record 6th world cup.
Brazil had beaten Chile in their last 5 encounters in the world cup, and also in the 2 qualifying matches en route to the world cup.
Chile had played some inspiring football in the world cup, and was expected to give the 5 time world champions a good run for their money.
For the initial stages of the game it did look as if Chile would not lie down against their more accomplished opponents, they had some good possession but could not convert it into meaningful chances. Brazil on the other hand, although, did not have the lion’s share of the ball at the start but looked to attack on every possible opportunity.
Constant Brazil pressure paid off when they were awarded a corner following a foul on the previous corner. Lucio protested for a penalty but still a corner was given by English referee Howard Webb. Maicon, who scored Brazil’s first goal in the world cup, sent the following corner in the box and unmarked defender Juan got his head on the ball to make it one nil. Though not a classic samba goal but they did not mind
The goal spurred the Brazilians on and deflated the spirited Chile side. Just 3 minutes later it was a silky move that led to the 2nd goal; Robinho latched on to the ball on the left flank and found space laying it off to Kaka at the edge of the box, Kaka showed immense awareness and slipped it to Fabiano who was making a darting run, Luis Fabiano made no mistake and rounded off the keeper before slotting it in to double the lead. The game looked all but done right then, as the Chilean heads dropped considerably, while Brazil coach Dunga celebrated on the touchline.
In the 2nd half Chile made a double change, with Rodrigo Tello and Jorge Valdivia coming on for Mark Gonzalez and Pablo Contreras.
But the initial few minutes of the 2nd period were quite untidy, as neither of the teams managed to get hold of the ball.
Arturo Vidal was booked for blocking the run of Kaka as he scarpered down the Brazilian left. Dani Alves decided to test his foot and shot from distance as he usually does and it flashed a couple of yards past the angle.
Chile just could not get going in the 2nd half, they had lost all their fluency that they had shown in the opening stages.
Chile started committing more men forward and left them-selves a little vulnerable at the back.
Lucio started a Brazilian attack by intercepting the ball and set up Robinho away down the right, but he could only win a corner which came to nothing.
Chile just like the initial stages of the first half started controlling possession, but without any threatening moves.
They paid the price for it soon after, Ramires ran from the halfway line, committing defenders and opening up space on the edge of the box for Robinho, who gloriously curled into the far corner of Claudio Bravo's net. It was game set at 3-0 and a match surely in the bag.
Brazil were by then toying with Chile who just looked to have given up by then, the pattern continued and Brazil conjured number of more attacks but the score remained 3-0.
So it is 6 out of 6 against Chile in the world cup for Brazil, and world cup is certainly heading to the business end now.
Brazil will take on Netherlands in the quarter finals, the 2 teams met in 98 in the last 16 and Brazil came out comfortable winners, but this time both teams look to be equally good. Even thoughBrazil may have the edge but Netherlands will leave no stone unturned to get past the Samba boys.
