FIFA World Cup: Funniest Moments In World Cup History
The World Cup provides a blend of emotions. However comedy isn’t always the first thing that comes to a person’s mind when they think about the tournament.
The Peruvian goal keeper, Ramon Quiroga was called ‘El Loco’ for a reason. He earned his reputation for doing strange and bizarre things over his career. In the 1978 World Cup in a match against Poland, Ramon constantly rushed off his line to throw in a tackle or two to the opposing strikers. But on one incident he raced into the opponents, half fouled a player and got a yellow card for his efforts.
Scotland’s official world cup song, ‘Army’ claimed that the Scots would win the World Cup and were the greatest team the footballing world had ever seen. The song sounded even funnier after the 1978 World Cup considering the apparent greatest World cup team lost to Peru by a score line of three goals to one and drew with Iran.
In the 1982 match between Kuwait and France, a Kuwaiti player herd a whistle and thought the referee had blown for a foul, that was not the case and since the Kuwaiti defence had stopped, The French scored a goal amongst all the confusion. However a Kuwaiti sheikh didn’t like what he saw and ordered the team to stop playing. Soon after, common sense kicked in and everyone got on with the game.
In the 1994 edition of the tournament, Diana Ross was scheduled to open the event. As part of her act all Ross had to do after her performance was to take a penalty and the goal keeper would let her score and the goal would fall apart and this would official represent the start of the tournament. There was only one small problem however, Ross kicks like a toddler. She completely missed the goal but the goal keeper still dived the wrong way and the goal still fell apart.
In the 1974 World Cup between Zaire and Brazil, the Brazilians had won a free kick just outside the Zaire box. The referee blew the whistle to let the Brazilians know they were good to take the kick whenever they were ready. A Zaire player, Mwepu, rushed from the wall after the whistle was blown and blasted the ball across the field, he thought he had out played the mighty Brazilians. The referee saw the incident, got confused and blew his whistle to have the kick taken again, apparently Mwepu didn’t know he couldn’t kick the ball till after the Brazilians had taken the free kick. It was hilarious that someone who was playing in the World Cup didn’t know some of the most basic rules of the game.
In the 2006 World Cup, Australia and Croatia took on each other in thriller of a game. But the game was made even more epic, when the English referee, Graham Poll pulled off the mother of all refereeing mistakes. He showed Josup Simunic, three yellow cards before showing him the red.
In the 1990 World Cup, Holland were facing Germany. Voller was fouled by Rijkaard, but soon after, both players were shown the yellow for blowing things out of proportion. Moments later they were still at it and the referee had no option but to show both the players their second yellow cards. But the funny thing was that after the whole incident was over and the players were leaving the pitch, Rijkaard felt as though enough justice hadn’t been done and he proceeded to spit into Voller’s hair on two separate occasions while leaving the pitch, surely Vuller didn’t find this funny at all but for every one at home watching the match it was simply hilarious.
