FIFA World Cup Soccer History: Biggest World Cup wins
Portugal’s posh and lustrous 7-0 battering of North Korea is the fourth seven goal triumph and the third biggest winning margin while rekindling up the question in our minds that what are the records for the highest scored games in the FIFA World Cup. The following is a rating of the best drubbing in World Cup football.

10. Turkey 7 South Korea 0 (1954)
It was the South Koreans, not their rivals from the north, which became victims in 1954 when they faced Turkey in the 1954 World Cup. They still faced the same number of goals as North Korea did against Portugal (7-0) but for the South Koreans, this didn’t happen to be their worst defeat. The Turkish striker Burhan Sargun starred in the match; scoring a hat-trick.

9. Uruguay 7 Scotland 0 (1954)
In the same year, defending champions Uruguay were on fire as they obliterated the first timers Scotland with a mammoth margin.  The debutants were hammered a hat-trick by Uruguay’s Carlos Borges.

8. Poland 7 Haiti 0 (1974)
The Polish were considered the dark horses of the World Cup in 1974. They opened their account by defeating Argentina and then destroyed the first timers Haiti. Haiti was expected to give in a tougher fight after producing an uprising against Italy when they produced the first goal. However, the Azzurri soon taught them a lesson by ending the saga 3-1. Striker Andrzej Szarmach scored a hat-trick in that match.

 7. Portugal 7 North Korea 0 (2010)
This was a shocker from North Korea as no one really expected their defence to fall like a pack of cards. They in fact had some pretty good chances for scoring but they lost all of them. Their defence was the key that faltered them as no coordination was seen. They had a good performance against Brazil though they lost 2-1. Against Portugal, Korea held them by just a goal by halftime but then the floodgates opened as 3 goals were scored in just 3 minutes. This is the only match on record that didn’t have a hat-trick scorer.

6. Sweden 8 Cuba 0 (1938)
The match had more significance as this happened to be Sweden’s first World Cup match. Later Sweden powered into the semi-finals with the help of two hat-trick scorers Tore Keller and Gustav Wetterstrom.

5. Uruguay 8 Bolivia 0 (1950)
The removal of Scotland and Turkey from Group 4 in the World Cup of 1950 left Uruguay and Bolivia to fight it out. Uruguay later on became the World Champions, defeating hosts Brazil in the final. The match against Bolivia saw a hat-trick striker Oscar Miguez.

4. Germany 8 Saudi Arabia 0 (2002)
Everybody had forgotten about the German play before the tournament started and not even their own fans were considering them as the favourites in 2002. But that was all about to change as they opened their account by the demolition of Saudi Arabia with a score line of 8-0. They later progressed to the final but lost to Brazil. The German striker Miroslav Klose produced a hat-trick and became the second highest scorer of the tournament.

3. Hungary 9 South Korea 0 (1954)
After the 7-0 humiliation that South Korea faced against Turkey, Hungary was about to teach the Koreans another lesson that would go into the annals of history. They directed a world class beating of 9-0 against the Koreans; a match in which the magnificent Ferenc Puskas and Zoltan Czibor each scored a hat-trick. Hungary further on went to the finals but lost 3-2 to West Germany.

 2. Yugoslavia 9 Zaire 0 (1974)
Zaire became the punching bag in 1974 after all other teams in the Group drew their matches. Zaire, which now is known as Congo DR was hammered by Brazil, Scotland and Yugoslavia. Scotland failed to score more than 3 different occasions so Brazil entered the next stage along with Yugoslavia. In the match against Yugoslavia, a hat trick was scored by Dusan Bajevic.

1. Hungary 10 El Salvador 1 (1982)
The ultimate achievement was acquired by Hungary in 1982 when they whipped El Salvador 10-1. Ironically though, the team reached the double figures there was just one hat-trick coming from striker Laszlo Kiss. Hungary was later knocked off from the Group after drawing their final game against Belgium.
