FIFA World Cup final 2010: Spain’s Fabregas celebrates the glorious moment of winning first ever World Cup title
The Arsenal captain played a crucial role in the FIFA World Cup final of 2010, when he came off from the substitute’s bench, to create a goal scoring opportunity for Andres Iniesta. Iniesta’s goal ended up being the decisive strike as Spain won the match by a goal to nil.
Fabregas was limited to a role off the bench in all of the games. He didn’t start even a single match for the Spanish, who fielded other superstars such as Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Villa in their starting line-up. Fabregas was used as an impact substitution to add some pace and creativity in the game, if required. Fabregas told the press after helping La Roja to their first ever World Cup title, that he dedicated the Spanish wins to his family members.
He added that the win itself, is a historic moment for Spain, something according to him that might never be repeated. Fabregas also said that he didn’t play as much in the World Cup as he would have liked to but the 23 year old remarked that winning the World Cup in the end was worth it all.
Fabregas also paid homage to the fans, saying that the Spanish football fans have been amazing. He also said that they follow the team to whichever venue the players play at and add incredible atmosphere to the place. He also stated that in two years time, fans will have another reason to celebrate at the European Championships in 2012.
Spanish manager Vicente Del Bosque was smiling at the end of the match, something that has seldom been seen in the World Cup campaign for the Spanish. Spain, who started the World Cup with a loss to minnows Switzerland won six matches in a row (including the World Cup final) to become World Champions for the first time in their football history.
Vicente Del Bosque, himself was humble in victory and congratulated the Dutch for playing very well and making it difficult for the Spanish to play their brand of football. He also said that it was an extremely intense match between both the sides.
Del Bosque, who led Real Madrid to European glory in early 2000’s, also stated that as soon as Fabregas was introduced into the game, Spain started to dominate possession. He added that Spain also developed depth into their game once the Arsenal captain replaced Xabi Alonso in central midfield.
Before the goal was scored, Spain and Holland both had some brilliant clear opportunities to take the lead but neither of the teams seemed to have what it takes to finish the game off. The Spanish manager said that Cesc Fabregas and David Villa both had good chances to score before Iniesta capitalized on his chance and gave Spain the lead.
Del Bosque also said that the Spanish dressing room was full of celebrations right now. He also paid importance to the fact that the victory which was achieved by the Spanish team was for the Spanish people. He commented that Spain’s victory in the final goes beyond sport.
