FIFA producer David Rutter taunts Pro Evolution Soccer could use some help
While the headline may have exaggerated things a tad bit, there is plenty of truth behind it. David Rutter, the producer of the FIFA series, suggested he wants to replicate what he did in the FIFA series, with Pro Evolution Soccer.
Rutter was behind the transformation of the FIFA franchise, morphing the game from the flat and stagnant series it had become, into THE football simulation game of the current generation. In fact, ever since Rutter took over at the helm, the FIFA series
has seen its best sales figures in the entire franchise’s history.
Rutter did, however, comment that he would not mind doing the same with FIFA’s closest rival, Pro-Evolution Soccer (PES). It should me mentioned that he was just as quick on insisting that he is not seriously considering defecting to Konami, and that he
was more than satisfied at EA Sports.
"I would be very honoured to be asked [to join the PES team]. But my roots are very much in the EA Sports culture in Vancouver and being surrounded by that amazing team of people and everything we do there. So I have no intention of going anywhere else,"
said Rutter while speaking to the press.
FIFA 12 is set to raise the bar in terms of football simulation games and widen the gap between the FIFA franchise and other franchises, like PES, with a host of new features, including the new and impressive physical engine. The same engine which the developers
behind Battlefield 3 are using in their game as well.
However, Konami remain confident that the latest iteration of PES will change the trend. Despite losing ground to FIFA, the PES series still has a huge following and according to Jon Murphy, the PES Team Leader, PES 12 will be the best in terms of gameplay.
Jon explained, "If you want pure gameplay, I think we'll smash them this year. We've got so many things going for us, but just the lightness of touch and the way the players move independently is fantastic. You notice it instantly."
The rivalry between the PES and FIFA series is one of the fiercest in the gaming world and both games have a list of awards and a history of critical and commercial success behind them. However, in recent years FIFA has taken over its rivals as the most
played football simulation game, something PES is still trying to recover from.
So when David Rutter, the man who turned the tables so to speak, suggested he would like to help PES get back to where they once were, it meant two things: he implied that FIFA was the better game and secondly, that he was showing off just a little.
Players can decide for themselves which is the better game when both FIFA 12 and PES 12 release later on this year.
