The official governing body of the game has stated that they do not officially recognise the record broken by the Argentinean, neither of Godfrey Chitalu and Zico.
Since Lionel Messi’s breaking of German legend, Gerd Muller’s record goal tally in a single calendar year, a number of claims have surfaced as to who is the actual holder of the hallowed record.
A lot of controversy has surrounded the most talked about subject in the football world this day, and FIFA were brought in to the matters by football associations of different countries, most notably by the Zambian FA and Brazilian football club http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Flamengo-c39361.
Zambian FA claimed that their player Godfrey Chitalu scored 107 goals in the 1972 calendar year and asked FIFA to acknowledge the record of their great.
Flamengo also had some talk of their own as they claimed that their player, Zico, held the record for scoring most goals in a single calendar year, and the number associated with the Brazilian was 89.
FIFA have greatly been bothered by these continuous claims and have hence decided to bring a halt to such talk rising everywhere.
They stated that they didn’t have a database to detail every football game played across the globe in the history and stated that the record is not an official achievement.
“We don’t have a database which details every football game played in every country from around the world since day one of their formation,” said FIFA spokesman http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Stone speaking to the BBC.
They also said that the organisation have not credited Messi for the record and same is the case for all the other players who have been  known to break the record.
They stated that the media was at the helm of everything associated with this matter as some media-man collected the statistics and shared them. They also believed that the event was given un-necessary hype and it has sparked a lot of controversy.
”It’s a record where someone in the media obviously collected statistics from somewhere and noticed Messi was about to pass that record.”
Messi is in the running for the Ballon d’Or award and the record stats may help him win the award for the 4th successive time.
