FIFA to Consider Goal Line Technology

This may come as a shock to most people, but FIFA president Sepp Blatter has gone on record to, apologize for the disallowed goal that Frank Lampard scored. The goal that was disallowed saw the English team’s moral crush and it led to them eventually losing to Germany and being knocked out of the tournament.

However that was not the only controversial moment during this world cup, Mexico were also victim to a refereeing error, which saw Carlos Tevez head the first goal for the Argentines, from an offside position, everyone including the scorer of the goal knew that that goal was offside.  But what matters most in matches is what the referees see and not what everyone else sees.

Blatter has spoken to the football governing bodies in both, Mexico and England and apologized for the referees mistakes personally. He says that he personally feel’s that introducing goal line technology would see the end of free flowing football, but on the other hand the mistakes that are made by referees when their sight is blocked are not to ignored.

He admitted that it happened in 1966, but back then they could not have used such technology. But the technological advancements over the years, allow for easy usage of goal line technology. But he still insisted on the fact that, football is a game that never stops and introducing such technology would hinder this basic concept. He also said that for situations such as the Mexico game, goal line technologies were not needed, the referees just needed to be sharper.

He concluded by saying that FIFA will soon launch an initiative to improve refereeing standards, once the current World Cup was over. He said that a new concept of how matches are to be controlled will be launched. He then said that he could not disclose any more on that topic, but something definitely had to be changed.

Most football fans across the globe, would agree to the fact that it’s not a question of if but when will the technology be introduced. Over the years numerous decisions have been made which have cost teams matches and tournaments, these incidents could have been avoided had there been proper usage of goal line technology.

The most recent example was the controversial qualification match between Ireland and France. French captain Thierry Henry handled the ball in the Irish ‘D’ and passed it to Gallas who headed home.  This result saw France qualify for the world cup and the Irish crash out. All of this could have been avoided had there been proper usage of goal line technology.

Some might argue that it would disrupt the free flowing nature of football, but that’s probably because their team hasn’t fallen victim to such incidents. Weather FIFA introduce the technology or not is now completely up to them, but it is still quite unclear as to what Blatter meant when he talked about a new concept to control games.
