FIFA under pressure after revelations of corruption during bidding of World Cups 2018 and 2022
The recent bids for the FIFA World Cups 2018 and 2022 are being criticised by everyone around the world.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Qatar-c2986 unexpectedly won the bid and FIFA is feeling the heat for making the decision. The problems were not noticed during the bid and now Qatar faces
a whole new dilemma to arrange the tournament in the middle of desert during the summer period. Nevertheless, the new allegations have come to the forefront and this might result in fresh bids for the nations for getting the hosting rights.
The former chairman of Football Association, Lord Triesman spoke before the members of Parliament at the Culture, Media and Sport Committee in the House of Commons. He presented allegations against four members of the FIFA executive committee who wanted
some irrational demands to be met in order to go in favour of England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup.
Nicolas Leoz of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Haiti-c2917. The Brazilian
member Ricardo Teixeira also demanded some kind of favour from the English, while Thailand’s Worawi Makudi was allegedly asking for TV rights for a friendly match against England. In short, the four members were involved in some kind of illegal activities
which were reported by Sunday Times before the actual bidding in Zurich. This revelation resulted in a failed English bid, as the rights were given to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Russia-c2991.
Triesman told the Committee that these demands were put before him on a number of occasions, sometimes in private sittings and at other times in the presence of other members. Nevertheless, it is something unethical on part of FIFA and a letter has been
written to Sepp Blatter, demanding answers for the said allegations.
At the same time, two of the FIFA members have allegedly taken bribes of $1.5 million in order to vote in favour of Qatar. According to the evidence presented by Sunday Times, the African members on the FIFA board, Issa Hayatou of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cameroon-c2865 and Jacques Anouma
of Ivory Coast, were paid in order to get their votes in favour of the Middle Eastern nation. These allegations have come after FIFA put a ban on two of their members for the very same reasons. Amos Adamu of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nigeria-c2970 has been banned for three years while a
one-year ban has been imposed on Reynald Temarii of Tahiti.
These two members were actually caught by the investigating team from Sunday Times, who offered them bribe for voting in favour of US. Although the methods were widely criticised by the FIFA committee but the bans had to be imposed for the corrupt practices.
The persons involved in the whole episode have come out defending their positions but these are not good times for FIFA especially for Sepp Blatter, who is thinking about running for another term as President.
Now, FIFA faces a real dilemma in terms of saving its name which has come under criticism from all circles. Ever since the 2010 bids in Zurich, allegations were labelled against members of the governing body for resorting to corruption and accepting bribes.
Now, with all the evidence presented before the Committee in the House of Commons, the whole system has come under scrutiny. All these members were involved in voting but their decisions have lost value on ethical grounds. This might result in renewed bidding
with new members on the board as well.
It would be better if the deserving nations get their World Cup hosting rights because it would help FIFA in regaining its significance. The hosting rights for England for the 2018 event and US for the 2022 World Cup seem right and have very little controversial
element attached to it.
