FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup: Germany becomes Double World Champions - Part 2
Both Men’s and Women’s indoor hockey teams from Germany managed to win the World Cup title at the FIH World Cup in Poznan on February 13.
Germany’s Men’s team managed to win their third successive title as they put in a tremendous effort to dominate Poland 3-2. It seems that Poland was unlucky again as they were World Cup finalists again for the third straight time. The match was exciting
as both teams battled it out for a victory. The game went down to the wire as extra time was needed for a result. The Austrians beat the Russians 5-0 to take the bronze medal in the World Cup.
Although they lost the final, Poland’s Mariusz Chyla was awarded the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament and his captain Dariusz Rachwalski was given the Player of the Tournament Award. Robert Tigges of the Netherlands was the Top Scorer with an amazing 16
goals. Austria’s Patrick Schmidt was awarded the Best Under-21 Player title of the World Cup.
In the exciting Men’s final, Germany had a few good early chances but Poland managed to score as Dariusz Rachwalski put one in for a lead. A few minutes later, Poland attacked and Tomasz Gorny scored a goal to give his team a decent 2-0 lead.
Matthias Witthaus fought back for Germany as he scored a tremendous goal before the end of the first half of play.
As Germany relentlessly attacked Poland’s goal, it was the brilliant skills of their goalkeeper Mariusz Chyla to keep the damage limited. After a penalty corner the Germans managed to claw their way back into the match as they tied it 2-all.
In the final minutes of the match, both teams were fighting it out to get the upper-hand and take home the victory and the World Cup title. However, neither team scored in the last few minutes as extra time was added on the match. It was Benjamin Wess of
Germany that managed to score in the extra time to earn their third World Cup with an impressive 3-2 victory over Poland.
Germany’s coach Markus Weise said, “It was really, really close and we were lucky to win it even though we played well. It could have gone both ways. We have great respect for the Poland team; they played a superb tournament.”
It was the perfect end to an exciting tournament as both the Women’s and Men’s team dominated the event to take home the World Cup titles. The teams showed off their tremendous talents as they cruised through the tournament to make it to the finals. The
fact that both teams from Germany managed to win the title is a credit to their brilliant skills.
