FILE TRANSFER. I can see the files in the external drive but they don't show up on the player

Question

I can see the files in the external drive but they don't show up on the player unit. Could this have something to do with them ast mp4 files? And, if so, is there a way to get them on the player to hear them? I've downloaded these songs from the Itunes Library. Thanks!
