In July im going on my first airplane ride, im 16

were flying from pdx to Chicago to Mco (orlando international)

I want to know how the luggage and security stuff works

like what is the process when you get to the airport?

what bags do they actually open and go through?

how does it work when I get off the first plane to go to the second?

do we have to get our bags and re go through security?

and do we get new luggage tags?

and if we have a little zip lock bag of liquids 3oz or less where do we put that?

any other info would be great

thanks

  1. its all very easy.

you get to the airport with all your luggage and stand in your airline line to check your bags you show them your ID and ticket,. if you have an E-ticket you will get it at the counter. then they print out sticker tags that go on your luggage and have an airport code so that it gets to the right destination. if yuo want you can then fill out your own tag with your home address in case the luggage gets lose. they have those at the counter.

they will put all your checked bags on a conveyer belt which go through x-ray security and may be opened by TSA. if they open your bags they put a note inside the bag that says your bag has been searched.

then once you get your ticket and check your bags they tell you what gate your flight is on. B12 for example would be terminal "b" at gate 12. so you would walk to terminal B and there you have to take off your shows, have your 3oz liquids in a plastic bag and put all of your stuff in a container to go through x ray. while its going through xray you walk through the metal detector and shwo them your boarding pass.

then once yo are cleared you are free to roam the terminal until your flight is ready to board. most people just sit around.

if you have a lay over it depends on the airport. some airports let you on the next flight and you just recheck into the next flights other airports make you get your checked luggage and recheck in all over again. it depends on the airport.

its all very easy, you'll see.

  2. Rule number one: GET TO THE AIRPORT EARLY!!! Don't wait until 15 minutes before you're scheduled to leave.

Baggage allowance is extremely strict these days. You can carry on TWO things -- a purse or backpack and one other carry-on bag as long as it fits either under the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin on the plane.

Check the airline you're flying with.

When you go through the security check point at PDX, you will probably have to take off your shoes and they'll be run through the xray machine (along with anything else that isn't physically attached to your body). YOU will walk through a metal detector. Don't wear a lot of heavy jewelry.

When you get to the gate where you'll be boarding, you can go up to the counter and check in (or you can check in at one of the kiosks near the ticket counters well before this).

When changing planes, tell the flight attendant that you have never done this before. She or he will guide you. SOMETIMES, you may have to go to a completely different concourse to make your connection flight (in Chicago, I have no clue -- Orlando is easier).

  3. Well for one you are flying into a great first time flying airport. MCO is very well laid out the only bad about it is that it takes forever to go through security because they only have one security line.

Now for the luggage you are going to want to get to PDX about two hours ahead of time. You will either give ur luggage to a sky cap and they will check it for u or you will take it inside to an agent and they will do. I recommend the skycap's cause it easier and they will sometimes let u get away with stuff. The agent or skycap will give you all your boarding passing, that includes you ones for the flight to Chicago and the ones from Chicago to MCO. Your luggage will be check in PDX and will not have to worry about it in Chicago the airline will send it right to MCO for u to get at the baggage claim. Now the FAA will put your bag threw a very large scanner and if they see something they dont like they will open ur bags and look threw them, so dont put anything valuable in your checked bags.

Security.... Um you cant have more than 3oz of an liquid, which means no water bottles or drinks. If you bring 3oz liquids they ask you to put them in a plastic bag and bring them as a carry on. But keep in mind if you need to bring more than 3 oz of liquids you can check them in your suitcase and they be fine. You can of course bring on the plane anything you buy in the Terminal. They will make u take off you shoes and any metal objects. You will go through a big metal detector. Now let me warm you you may be a random check in where they take you aside and check even more, but your odds of getting that is low, unless you are from/or look like your from the middle east.

Now for connections...... When you land in Chicago (Midway or O'Hare) you will get off the plane and take out your boarding passes and get out the one that say "From Chicago to MCO" it should have your gate number and flight number, but just to be safe go to one of the TV that shows all the flights and see what gate you are at just to double check. You will go to that gate and wait to board your next plane. If you have alot of time in between you an go walk around the terminal and get something to eat or just look around.

I almost forgot luggage tags........ You will not need new luggage tags when you check your bags in PDX they skycap or agent will put tags saying MCO on them so when  you get to MCO they will come out on the carousel with all the baggage.

I hope i was helpful and if you have anymore questions just send me an email i will be willing to help you.

P.S. If you are willing to tell me what airline and with airport in Chicago i may be able to help you more.

  4. The process at most airports is this:

    1. Be sure to be at the airport at *least* an hour and a half before your flight is scheduled to leave - two hours would be better.

    2. After you check in, you'll drop off your checked luggage at a TSA screening point (usually near the ticketing area) so that it can be scanned before being taken to be loaded onto your plane. TSA also performs random bag screenings - they might pick your bag to be opened up and searched. If that happens and your suitcase is locked, they'll break the lock. Be sure not to put any valuable items in your suitcase (not saying that TSA would steal anything, but someone else might) - put them in your carry on instead.

    3. At the airport security checkpoint:

    - Remove your jacket (if you're wearing one) and shoes, and take your Ziploc bag of liquids out of your carry on (you only need to have liquids in 3 fl.oz. containers in your carry on luggage - regular sized liquids are fine in your checked luggage). Put these items into a bin (they'll have them at the secuirty checkpoint). Into another bin, put your carry on bag(s). There's a chance that one of your bags might be searched through by hand - if that happens, just follow the TSA officer's instructions (he/she will tell you that you can watch but can't touch your bag).

    4. Find your gate before you do anything else (i.e. go to the bathroom, get a snack, etc.).

    Other things:

Your bags will be checked all the way through to MCO - you won't have to go and get them, nor will you have to go back through security.

The ticketing agent will put tags on your luggage for you, like this one: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/143/33640...

That's all you need to know, really. Airports are very easy to navigate in general - just look for signs overhead to see where you're going.

    Have a great trip!

  5. Well: the luggage and security works like this: it might take up to 45 minutes to get through. you have to take off your shoes and they run them through like a x ray along with your bags, and carry ons. if you are over 18 years of age you have to go through the metal detector but even if your not, you still have to go through the minimal one. the process is: you walk in and go to the check in counter. there might already be a line so you might have to wait. then they take your big bags, weigh them and put them on the flight. then you go through security and after that you go to your terminal. they have resteraunts so that you can eat before you get on your flight. they open every bag you have and check for the illegall stuff or stuff they dont want on the airplane.you get off the plane and travel to your next terminal it is as easy as that, also you doget new tags but they transport your luggage so you dont have to. you dont have to go through security again. and just put the liquid in ur suit case. hope i helped!!!!! :)
