***PLEASE read it all if you think you can help***

I've been to my local reservoir 7 strait 2-hour trips on my canoe and 2 times off the shore and have never caught a fish.

not a single one.

barely any bites.

The local fisherman tell me to use night crawlers and i do.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG.

> Experienced fisherman tell me my pole and line will work fine to i don't know if that has anything to do with my bad results.

> I usually will pick a spot to fish, I'll stay there for about 25 mins to an hour, and i just throw my line were i see the most splashes.

Please tell me the following:

> What do you use as bait?

> What time of day do the fish eat?

> Any other techniques that get you results?

****i fish catch and release so i don't care what i catch, this reservoir is loaded with bass and catfish.

  1. 1st of all do not concentrate on where you see the most splashes.  These splashes are carp 9 times out of 10. Carp are hard to catch using conventional baits but have been known to accidentally suck up a  worm while feeding on algea. Also, as a novice fisherman stay with live bait.  here is a run down of a few basic simple rules that may help you out

    1. stay with the live bait: throw a worm all the way to the bottom and just let it sit with slight tension on your line.

also find a nice cove with 9 feet or more of water and throw a sm or med live minnow on a  bobber close to  some downed trees in the water or near weed beds or aquatic grasses. hook the minnow from the bottom of the chin up between the nose slits

    2. stop by your local bait shop. Not the big fishing store. Find a mom and pop style shope and stop in. Ask where the fish are bitting and who is catching fish on what type of bait. I have not met a single bait shop owner who will not divulge information

    3. structure is the key: find places with submerged stumps or submerged grass beds. Small hills or humps under water will also hold fish. they are attracted to this. One of the best places that you may have luck is near docks or boat houses.

    4. hook size: use  a descent sized hook; for blue gill the rule of thumb is your thumb.  do not use a hook bigger then the length of your thumb nail. For bass no bigger than  the tip of your thumb to the first joint. Also use a small guage hook. Thick hooks tend to kill your live bait faster than small guage hooks.

    5. Stay away from plastics for now: Plastic baits and artificial lures work  better than most people think. I no longer fish with live bait unless i'm going for catfish. However, they take a lot fo practice and getting the techniques down. each lure is used a different way under different conditions and different areas of a lake. you have to factor these in  to pick the right one.

    6. First safe light: This is when I usually launch my boat check your local weather report and check for official sunrise. This is usually the time your local DNR considers first safe light. I fish from then til about an hour before noon the take a break.  Afternoon to sundown is another good time to fish.

good luck and hope it helps.... if you need anymore help or have questions feel free to contact me

  2. ok look for a place with vegetation

if you see splashes in the water go there

night crawler are good  caught a lot of sunfish and bluegill

buzzer baits work too u just real them in

a couple days a go i saw a guy catch 2 catfish with night crawlers

also try peanut butter for catfish

for catfish you don't want a bober because they are bottom feeders

for bass try plastic worms texas rig it I'm gonna try that tomorrow

i see every one using it at hidden lake

go like at 6 am or go at 5pm for best results

i sometimes go a like 11 am  and i still catch fish

  3. from about 5am through to 8am is the best feeding time 'usually'

    i use cockels

I fish at sea so I catch whiting, squid and snapper and I find these usually do the trick

obviously persistance pays off...and it seems u have a fair bit of that so keep trying.

I have also been able to catch carp in the murray with dough.

  4. For catfish, fish all night long using a good commercial bait. Put a heavy sinker on the bottom and a large hook with a 8 inch leader  above the sinker so that the bait can float free from the bottom but stay close to the bottom.

For Bass use weedless hooks (rubber worms) and cast close to shore in the weeds.

  5. The answer is WIND, any west wind, if you have north wind you will not catch a thing, south wind not so good either, but west wind fish are caught.

  6. Why don't you cast along the shore before rowing out.

Fishes in the reservoir don't usually hang around in the middle of the pool of water. Do some shore fishing along the shaded shore full of weed and under low tree canopy then row out.

If the spot is dry from fishes it doesn't matter how long you stay there, you should start moving to another better location. Patience is good but its more productive to be hard working and cover larger areas.

    good luck.

  7. Cos they can see u that's all, when ur out there on a canoe no fish will come near u hoping to be caught.if its a reservoir its much easier to catch them cos they go nowhere. If I go there to fish,I think in less than a month the fish will be out of stock.don't listen to all the guys there some r simply average fisherman n mostly talk.I once sat at a place in hiding to wait for the time n what bait the fish is going after for the whole day.I realised what n where plus when the fish comes to feed.splashesdon'tt mean big fish just fish, provided u see it jump up from the surface.everyday the fish will definitely feed for about 40Min's sometime less after its filled up,so the main predator is feeding at the same time the smallestbait fishh is feeding.most of the time of the day many fish will feed irregularly,so the best time at where n what is for u to find out by really investigating onyourr own.u really think the guys would simply spill it out just by your few words???sometimes after a few months of data collection that will determine the best time to get the most out of that location.U hav tactics to play, data to collect like wind direction/velocity/speed-tides in or out and what hour during which tide-the moon phases too-moon rise n moon set-sunrise n sunset-which hour even to minutes-seasonal changes at what time in that year-dates-which hooksize the fish there prefer-how long would the trace the fish prefer-which water column the fish prefer by using the counting until u feel ur bait at the bottom even u fish with a bobber/float by letting it sink so to feel their bites at which watercolumn-even which line, like a tenpound test maybe 6lbs they prefer-constant places that produced big trophy cos of the area ability to provide food, many facts over luck.dont think that fishing is all luck just 30percent is luck the remaining is hard intelligence never say die.

  8. On arriving put a couple of hand fulls of ground bait to attract the fish.  Time is always a factor.  You cannot just chuck in your line and expect a fish to come and jump on your hook.  Patience is a must with fishing.  Read more mags on fishing and watch fishing programs.  They are great to give advise on all the aspects of fishing.  You could also try a fishing coarse on a local lake for tips.

  9. Are you using a float on your line? If so, try moving it a little farther from the hook so the hook will be deeper into the water. Try different places also, if your not doing any good in the deep part of the reservoir try closer to the shore. Also, try different types of bait as well.

  10. ok well 1)best bait to use would be worm classic or a small rubber lure on the edge of the weeds.2)hour before and after sunrise and sunset are the best times.3)well lure fishing on the edge of weeds are the best technique for bass. catfish are scavengers so if you see any swirls cast a worm on a simple stick float. it is simple but effective. need any more advice email me.
