FIVB President pays a visit to Algerian Volleyball Federation – Volleyball News
The Algerian Volleyball Federation invited FIVB President, Jizhong Wei, on a courtesy tour to Algeria. Considering the request, Mr Wei arrived in Algeria on Wednesday, June 15. He was warmly received by the President of Algerian National Olympic Committee
and other officials of the Algerian Volleyball Federation. The courtesy visit will last for four days and Mr. Wei will fly back on Saturday, June 18.
During his stay, he will visit various athletic training facilities in the region and he will show up at the Mini Volleyball Tournament in which approximately 2,000 children will be competing. Furthermore, the final showdown of the Algerian National Volleyball
Cup will be organised on Friday, June 17, and Wei will be parts of the proceedings.
The sole purpose the Mr. Wei’s visit is to look for potential volleyball development elements in Algeria. The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) is always concerned about helping out the national and regional volleyball federations with their
operations. The president’s visit is meant to benefit the Algerian volleyball in as many ways as possible. The National Volleyball Federation of Algeria has put some serious efforts to promote the sport in the country and the world governing body is taking
notice.
Algeria has presence in the volleyball scene with it men’s and women’s national teams. Men’s National Volleyball Team finished second in the 2009 African Volleyball Championship but have not been able to achieve any other significant milestones. Overall,
the Algerian men’s team has three gold-medals in its custody. They seized gold at the 1991 All Africa Games and they captured the title of the African Championship in 1991 and 1993. Since then the national team has been unable to reach new heights.
The women’s team has had worse luck than their male counterparts. They last competed at the 2010 World Championship. The team was downed because of their shaky performance and eliminated from the preliminary round-robin and they were settled for 21st
position in ranking.
Nonetheless, the Algerian Volleyball Federation is keen to encourage the young crop of players to join the national squad and bring titles to their country. The federation has organised different activities to attract new players. Mr. Wei has also taken
notice of all the activities of the organizations and has assured the support of the FIVB.
