Russia’s success story
The Russian squad is enjoying a great form in the championship. They topped the first round of the championship and maintained their winning streak by claiming the first match of second round. The defending champion Russia has been placed in Pool E and it
is accompanied by hosts Japan, Turkey, Serbia, South Korea, Poland, Peru and China. In the first match of the second round, Peruvian ladies dared to challenge top-form Russia on 6th November, 2010.
Russia came strong on Peru since the beginning of first set. Peru’s team started the game with a lot of mistakes. They needed time to poise their feet in the game but Russian strikers didn’t give them a chance to stand in the way of their spikes. Russian
Kosheleva stormed Peru’s court with ground-breaking shots. She spotted the perfect gaps in the opponents’ half and rolled off the ball with lightening speed. Russia didn’t face resistance from the Peruvian side and easily built a strong lead of points.
Faiza Tsabet of Peru put up the effort. She found rare gaps in Russian half and did a great job of stealing points but it didn’t bring a major change in the game. Russia added points after points and took the game away from struggling Peru’s team. The set-point
reached, while Peru was 9 points behind Russia. The killing spike of Russian spiker closed the first set at 25-15. The situation remained same for Peru in the second set. Russia restricted Peru’s score to a low stake and overpowered them with a score of 25-15
in second set.
However, Peruvian players didn’t lose hope and continued their effort in the third set. They couldn’t match their performance with the stronger Russian side but their struggle was admirable. Russia ousted them with a score of 25-20 and declared match victory.
