FIVB Volleyball Update: The semi-final qualifiers for the 9th–12th places
The FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010 has revealed the results at the end of second round on Wednesday, 10th November, 2010. The championship was kicked off with the first preliminary round matches last month. The first round of the championship
continued from October 29 to November 3rd, 2010. Initially six teams were eliminated while championship entered the second phase. The second round of the championship completed its run from November 6-10. Several cities of Japan hosted the wonderful
matches and kept the fans entertained with unlimited fun. Out of 16 teams in the second round of the championship, only 12 teams got promotion to the final round.
Teams were split in two pools in the second round of the championship. Pool E consisted of Russia, Japan, Serbia, Turkey, Poland, China, South Korea and Korea. Similarly Pool F of the FIVB Championship accommodated Brazil, United States, Germany, Italy,
Cuba, Netherland, Thailand and Czech Republic. Since the elimination bracket was on in second round, Czech Republic, Thailand, Peru, and South Korea couldn’t survive. They were eliminated while rest of the teams marched into the final round of the championship.
The top two teams from each pool were finalized for the 1-4 positions, next four high ranking teams settled for the 5-8 position competitions. Following the same pattern, Poland, Netherland, China and Cuba qualified for 9-12 positions in the Women’s World
Championship. The first semi-final will be played between Poland and Netherlands. Quite similarly, the second semi-final for 9-12 positions will see China and Cuba in the court.
1- Poland
Poland opened the championship with the label of Pool A team. The Polish exhibited an average performance and earned third position at the end of first round. They lost three matches and captured success in only two. However, they qualified for the second
round of the championship. Poland defeated South Korea in the opening match of second round. The start was good but they couldn’t overcome strong Russia and China teams in the following two matches. Thanks to Turkey which created a chance for Poland to play
in the final round of the FIVB Women’s World Championship and let Poland get its share of success. Poland availed the opportunity by dismissing Turkey in the final match of second round and settled for 9-12 semi-final.
2- Netherlands
The Dutch team was one of the top teams of Pool B in the first round of FIVB Women’s World Championship. They followed Brazil and finished in the second position. The Netherlands’ team won three matches and easily managed to catch a slot in the second round.
Things changed drastically in the second round and a real disaster started for Dutch team. Netherlands won the first match against Cuba but lost the following three matches in a row. The dream for better status was shattered and Dutch finished the second round
with a low ranking. Now they aim to capture the number 9 position. They are scheduled to take on Poland at Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan today (Saturday).
3- Cuba
The Caribbean ladies from Cuba enjoyed a great form in 2010 season. They made great achievements at the NORCECA competitions. The team had great plans to earn a good status in the FIVB Women’s World Championship. They finished the first round of the championship
in third position. They got the second round ticket and took up the challenge of competing with stronger teams. They defeated Czech Republic and Italy in the second round, which enabled them to play for 9-12 semi-finals.
4- China
China was placed in Pool D in the first round. Out of five matches, they pulled off success in two combats. China showed incredible effort in the second round and claimed three matches and reserved a berth in the 9-12 semi-finals on Saturday.
