FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship Pool E summary
With two games left for each team, the standings in Pool E of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Women's Volleyball World Championship’s second round are starting to take shape.
The first and second place finishers from each pool will play for the championship in the semi-finals. The bottom two teams from each pool will be eliminated, and the rest of the teams will play for positions 5-12.
Russia remains undefeated in the tournament at 5-0 with games against Japan and Serbia remaining. Both teams will play hard against the defending champions, but a win in either one will clinch a top-two spot in the Pool.
Japan suffered their first loss in the tournament on Saturday against China, they’re now 4-1. They’ll play Russia and Korea in their remaining games. A win against either team will probably be enough to advance, but if they lose to Korea, they could find
themselves in third.
Korea is 3-2 and trailing Japan in the points differential tie-breaker. Japan is at 1.078 while Korea has a ratio of 1.013. If Korea can beat Japan and Serbia they’ll have a very good chance of playing for the championship. If they lose to Japan, they’ll
have to settle for playing for fifth place.
Serbia lost to Turkey and beat China in the second round so far, they’re 3-2 right now with games against Russia and Korea remaining. They’ll need Japan to lose both their games, and they’ll have to win their own games to have any real chance of playing
for the championship. Their point ratio is 0.989 at the moment, and not good enough to win most tie-breakers.
So far in the second round, Poland has won in five sets against Korea, and lost in straight sets to Russia. They’re 2-3 right now with games against China and Turkey remaining. Both matches will be tough for Poland, but they do have a good points ratio,
1.037, which could help them get into the third or fourth position. If they do move into third or fourth, they’ll play for positions 5-8. If they stay in fifth spot, they’ll play for positions 9-12.
Turkey is also 3-2 after a win against Serbia and a loss against Japan. They play Peru and Poland in their remaining games. The match between Poland and Turkey on Wednesday could decide fourth place. Serbia is currently in fourth, but they have tough matches
coming up, and losses will open the door for the winner of the Poland-Turkey match.
China is 1-4 after beating Japan and losing to Serbia in their first two second round matches. They still have a chance to get into fifth or sixth and avoid elimination, which would be an embarrassment for a team ranked third in the world. They have matches
against Poland and Peru remaining, both are must-wins for their confidence as a team alone.
Peru won two matches in the first round against Canada and the Dominican Republic. But with both of those teams not qualifying for the second round, Peru entered the second round 0-3. The second round standings do not reflect wins against teams that failed
to reach the round. Peru then lost their first two games of the second round, and has a points ratio of 07.53, the worst in the Pool. They’re not quite officially eliminated from the tournament yet with games against Turkey and China remaining, but there’s
no real hope of them advancing at this point.
