FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championships Recap: Tuesday's Pool C matches
Four teams are set to advance from Pool C in the Federation Internationale de Volleyball Women's Volleyball World Championship after Tuesday’s games. Each team has one match remaining, but Kazakhstan has
already been eliminated with a 0-4 record. Croatia is mathematically still alive but would need miracles to advance.
Pool C
Croatia vs Germany
Germany improved to 3-1 with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Croatia, who fell to 1-3. Germany will take on Thailand in their final match of the opening round, and can clinch second place with
a win. Croatia will face Kazakhstan in their last match.
Leading the scoring for Germany was Margareta Kozuch with 19 points, two of which came from serving aces, and Senna Usic led the Croatian team with 15 points.
Croatia looked good in the first set, forcing Germany into extra points, but the German team settled down after that, and played well all around.
“I'm very satisfied with the performance of my team because we knew that Croatia has very good individual players with a lot of experience and play at a high level,” said Germany’s coach, Giovanni Guidetti.
“The first set was complicated for us, but I have to congratulate my team, because they stayed calm. We just waited for the right moment. We played good Volleyball and put on a good performance.”
Cuba vs Thailand
Cuba beat Thailand 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 27-25), as both teams evened up their records at 2-2. The match was closer than the 3-0 score indicated as two of the three sets went into extra points. Cuba’s win
was powered by their blockers, who outblocked Thailand 13-3.
Yoana Palacois and Kenia Carcaces topped Cuban scorers with 19 and 17 points respectively, and Pleumjit Thinkaow led the Thai team with 12 points.
“I congratulate Thailand because they played a good match,” said Cuba’s coach, Juan Gala Rodriguez. “We knew the match would be difficult because the Thais have improved their technique a lot and they're
a team that never quits. But also I think our team has been improving.”
Cuba will face a strong American team in their last match of the first round.
USA vs Kazakhstan
The American team improved to 4-0 with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) win over Kazakhstan. They’ll play Cuba on Wednesday, and will clinch first place in the pool with a victory.
Destinee Hooker led the United States with 15 points, and Sana Jarlagassova led Kazakhstan with 10.
“I would say they are a brilliant team, but this time we could also see how other teams play, and we recognise that we should learn more and train more for the next tournament,” said Nelli Chsherbakova,
Kazakhstan’s coach.
