FIVB Women's World Championship round two recap: Pool E part one
The second round of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Women's Volleyball World Championship began this weekend. Two pools of eight teams began round robin play on Saturday and Sunday before
breaking Monday. Play will resume Tuesday.
Peru vs Korea Pool E
Korea entered the second round with a 2-1 record, but lost their first match of the second round in five sets to Poland. Peru started the second round with a 0-3 record and lost their first match to Russia
in straight sets.
Peru fought hard against the 21st ranked Korean team, but fell 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23). Korea improved to 3-2 while Peru dropped to 0-5.
Yeon-Koung Kim is the tournament’s second best scorer so far, and she added 21 points to her total on Sunday. Peru’s captain, Leyla Chiuan, led Peru with 16 points.
It was the first match of the day, and both teams looked a little slow in the first set. Errors were the preferable scoring method for the first half of the first set, and with the Koreans down 13-9, head
coach, Sam-Ryong Park, called a time out.
The time out looked like it helped, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Peru from taking a 1-0 lead in the match. The next three sets went to Korea, who looked as though the first set loss was as much as a
wake call as their coach’s words were.
“We didn't perform as I had wished, but yesterday we fought a full five sets against Poland late in the afternoon, and the players were tired physically,” said Park. “But we got the result, and that was
the good part of today's game.”
Korea will play Japan on Tuesday, and Peru will play Turkey.
Poland vs Russia Pool E
The defending champion Russian team continues to dominate in the second round. After beating Peru in straight sets on Saturday, they went on to beat Poland in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 33-31). Russia
remains undefeated with a 5-0 record in the second round. Poland fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Russia looked very good in the first two sets, winning them easily with the tournament’s tallest player, Ekaterina Gamova, leading the way with 19 points. Poland’s top scorer was Anna Werblinska with 14
points.
Poland pushed back in the third set, driving the set deep into extra points before Bednarek-Kasza of Poland overhit a spike to give Russia the win.
“We prepared very well for the match against Poland and although it was tough in the third set, those preparations helped us to win today,” said Russian team captain Maria Borodakova. “Our strategy is
a secret, but we did work on dealing with (Poland's) Malgorzata Glinka-Mogentale.”
Russia will play Serbia on Tuesday while Poland will go on to face China.
