FIVB Women’s World Championship update: Brazil finishes first round in great style
The Women’s National Volleyball Team from Brazil has grabbed world-wide attention and turned many heads around with a blazing performance in the first round of FIVB Women’s World Championship. The runner-up team of FIVB Grand Prix earlier this year, Brazil
is one of the top-teams that have their eyes set on the title trophy of FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010.
The team has never won the World Championship before, but they are totally shaped up to make a difference this time around. They opened the championship on Friday, October 29 and finished the first round of the tournament with a score of 3-0. Teams from
Kenya, Czech Republic and the Netherlands clashed with Brazil but failed to hinder Brazil’s performance. The girls in lovely white-shirts rocked the podium and amazed the spectators with a display of incredible play.
Brazil vs. Kenya (29th October, 2010)
On the opening day of the tournament, Brazil had an easy task to defeat Kenyan team. The match was played at Hamamatsu Sport Arena in Hamamatsu, Japan, while Brazil posted a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, and 25-11) victory over struggling team of Kenya.
Brazil was too strong for the Kenyan team. They influenced Kenya’s team by producing powerful serves and hitting the ball at rocket-speed. Fabiana Caludino, the captain girl of Brazilian team installed the players in unique receiving positions and barred
Kenya to score points. Brazil attacked with Welissa Gonzaga who threw ground breaking spikes. The arena echoed Brazil’s success in the first set at 25-15. On the other hand, Kenya put a great effort to come out of blues but Brazil didn’t allow them to stay
on their feet. The killing spikes and deadly aces continued in the following set until Brazil claimed victory.
Ladiya Maiyo formed a good combination with Mercy Moim and tried to raise Kenya’s score. They put good effort but couldn’t achieve desired results and lost the second set. Brazil was quick to thrash 25-16 in second set and attained more power against Kenya.
The hard-hitting of Brazil diminished Kenya’s chances to grab success. Brazil ended the game by posting 25-11 victory in third set.
Brazil vs. Czech Republic (30th April, 2010)
The Czech Republic’s team challenged Brazil on the second day of the championship. Brazil enjoyed a good form and aroma of victory was still fresh in players’ minds. They posted 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, and 15-9) victory over Czech Republic. They
opened the game with impressive delivery of spikes but fired-up Republicans, who lost their first match to Netherlands, gave a hard time to Brazil. Czech side got full advantage of Aneta Havlickova who stormed Brazil’s court with unstoppable under-hand shots.
First set of the match kept both sides engaged for 25 minutes and finally Czech Republic finished with the tag of winner. They posted 25-22 victory over Brazil in the opening set.
Brazil made a good come-back in the following set. Pereira Natalia’s good blocking saved many points and she also provided enough damage to the opponents with powerful hits. Brazilian team threw the ball from different angles and reversed the score of 25-22
on Czech Republic. The game was levelled at 1-1; Czech Republic once again disturbed the balance by capturing third set. The Team Brazil was flabbergasted and attacked aggressively in the fourth set. Czech Republic couldn’t do anything but regret the loss
of fourth set. Brazil achieved the mark by thrashing 15-9 in the final set and claimed match victory.
Brazil vs. Netherlands (31st October, 2010)
The winning Brazilian crew stroke with Dutch team in the third pool-play match and ousted them by scoring 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, and 25-14). The Netherlands’ team started out well but gradually Brazil drafted them under-pressure and snatched victory from them.
The Dutch ladies failed to defend their positions and fell victim to Brazilian rule in the match. Brazil won the match with good margin and finished the first round being unbeaten. They only lost two sets in three-day game.
