FIVB World Cup: China defeats Korea in straight sets - Volleyball
The Chinese women’s national volleyball team took on the Koreans on November 13 as part of the ongoing FIVB World Cup that is taking place in Japan. The Japanese city of Sapporo was the backdrop for the 3-0 of victory for the Chinese.
It did not take long for the competition to come to its end as the Chinese were able to win the match by bagging three back to back sets. The first set of the match was the only one in which the Koreans showed some signs of life and challenged the Chinese.
However, China was up for the challenge and did not let go of the opening frame. The loss of the first set seemed to have seeped all the energy out of the Koreans and put it in the Chinese as they were able to smother the Koreans in the second set. The loss
of the first two sets got the Koreans to play better in the third set but the effort came in too late and it was not enough to stop the Chinese from winning it and sealing the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-21, 25-8 and 25-16.
The coach of the Chinese team, Yu Juemin, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after the match had reached its close: “Today’s game was the last of third round. And so far we had eight games so we’re mentally and physically tired,
but we did well. This game was very important for us.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Korean side, Kim Hyung-Sil, shared his views by making the following statements: “So far we haven’t won against China, and today was not so good. China’s height and power were better than us. For our setter it was her
first time to play in such a big game. In Tokyo [the site of round four play] we will do our best to win.”
The player that was able to earn the top scorer title in the match was the Chinese h*i Ruoqi, who registered a total of 13 points for her team. Ruoqi was not the only one that kept the pressure on the Koreans, Zhang Lei also helped by adding 10 points of
her own. On the Korean side, the player that was the most active was Hwang Youn-Joo, who made her presence felt by pulling off 11 points for her team.
The Chinese had a tough day before the match with the Koreans as they had to defeat the Serbians, yet they were able to put on a good show while taking on the Koreans.
