FIVB announces change in schedule of Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament – Volleyball news
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) has recently announced a few changes in the schedule of upcoming Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament, which is set to take place in Tokyo, Japan.
In the light of new plan, the tournament will be held from June 1 to 10. Previously, the competition was scheduled for June 2-9. The official statement about the change in schedule of the competition was released from the head quarters of FIVB in Lausanne,
Switzerland, on March 9.
With the extension of dates, the matches will be played on June 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, while the teams will get three days’ off. Apart from the change in the schedule, other things remain unchanged. The Asia Volleyball Men’s Continental Olympic Qualification
will also be combined with the competition in Japan. Hence, teams from Japan, Iran, China, South Korea, and Australia will be on board to earn the Olympic ticket via Qualification Tournament.
According to the set competition formula of International Volleyball Federation, a total of 12 teams per gender will take part in the 2012 London Olympic Games. The grid of 12 teams will be finalised via FIVB World Cup, continental Olympic qualifying tournament,
and world Olympic qualifying tournament.
Russia, Poland, and Brazil have already reserved three berths in the Olympic Games via 2011 FIVB World Cup in Japan.
Moreover, five vacancies are on stake for the continental Olympic qualifying tournaments. Great Britain is already on board being the host nation, while three teams will be finalised through the world Olympic qualifying tournament.
The upcoming Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan will offer one Olympic ticket to the team with maximum points. Japan is the top contender of the Olympic ticket. The local team will have certain advantage in the competition over visiting
teams. However, China and Asian Champion Iranian team are also eyeing the top slot in the competition.
