FIVB introduces new formula for World Championships – Volleyball news
The three-day meeting of Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) successfully reached its end on Friday, April 8.
The gathering was attended by the top officials of FIVB and the Board of Governors. The venue of the meeting was headquarters of FIVB in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Many things were on the agenda of the annual meeting of FIVB. Different prospects of the sport and development factors were brought into discussion. New policies and formulas were introduced. Overall, it was a very important meeting, which is surely going
to have positive impact on the volleyball development and promotion in the running season and afterwards.
The Board has introduced the new format for the next FIVB World Championships, which are scheduled to take place in 2014. The decision about the new formula of World Championships was finalised on Thursday, the second day of the meeting.
According to the new design, the women’s and men’s world championships will see 24 teams in the competition. The host nation will reserve the right of being automatically promoted to the final round, while the rest of the teams will go through the qualifying
process. The championships will include the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. This idea was actually put into experiment in 2002 edition of FIVB World Championship. Now it has been legalised that the World Championship will progress in accordance with
the new format.
The participating 24 teams will be further divided into four pools, while each pool will accommodate six teams. Initially, the competitions will start with the preliminary robin round. At the end of the preliminary robin round, top four teams from each pool
will get a chance to play in the next round.
The eliminated eight teams will take their positions in the last eight spots on the ranking chart. The successful teams of the preliminary round will play in the quarter-finals, which will be followed by the semi-finals and the final showdown of the championship.
Nonetheless, the format of the 2014 FIVB World Championships has not been entirely changed. Some of the rules remain exactly the same. One such rule is the number of vacancies per continent.
It will remain the same, while AVC will send four teams in each category; CAVB will be represented by three men’s and women’s teams. Likewise, 10 European teams will be on board in both competitions. Three men’s and two women’s teams will come from CSV,
while five men’s and six women’s teams will play under tag of NORCECA.
