FIVB reveals new World Rankings of volleyball teams – Volleyball news
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) announced the new World Rankings of men’s and women’s volleyball teams on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.
The official news was released from the head quarters of FIVB in Lausanne, Switzerland. The standings of the teams have been updated based on the alteration of percentage in different championships.
For instance, the percentage of continental championships shifted to 100% from 50%. Likewise, the FIVB Volleyball World Championships went to 100% from 75% and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games’ percentage decreased from 50% to 25%. Furthermore, the recent results
of the 2011 FIVB World Cup also affected the pervious rankings.
As result of alteration in the standings, Cuban men’s volleyball team has been lucky to move to the top five teams in the world. Previously, they held sixth position with a total of 183.5 points, while Team USA was No. 5 with 187 points.
According to the new ranking, Cuba has moved to No. 5 position with 160 points, whereas US team has been shifted one step down to sixth position on the chart (148 points).
Elsewhere Iran and Germany have flipped their positions. Iran’s passionate display at the 2011 FIVB World Cup in Japan benefitted the team and the Asian Champions improved to 12th position. On the other hand, Germany shifted down to 13th position.
Currently, the two teams have a difference of four points. Likewise, Japanese team moved above Venezuela to 15th and Canada, Tunisia and Korea move into joint 18th and 20th positions, respectively. France, which was previously ranked 18th in the world, slipped
three places to 21st.
In the women’s section, top six teams remain unchanged. USA, Brazil, Japan, Italy, China, and Serbia have the same positions like before. However, Russia has dropped one place to seventh in the women’s standings. Previously, they shared the No. 6 slot with
Serbia. The Dominican Republic climbed up ninth position above Cuba, while Turks fell one spot to 11th.
Women’s teams from Thailand and Korea moved to 12th and 13th, respectively. Elsewhere in the top-20 teams, Poland and the Netherlands have new places. Poland dropped two places to 14th, while Dutch team moved to 20th.
