FM3? As I understand it with the new law, you get one year to bring in your personal belongings (Menaje)?

I want to bring a pickup truck now on my FM3 but I won't be ready for about 3 years to bring in my one time allotment of personal belongings. So can I keep extending bringing in my persoanl belonings each time I renew my FM3 or do you have to move your personal belongings within one year of the orginal FM3 application?

  1. Your truck is not considered part of the "household goods".  You just need to get a permit for it at the consulate or at the Aduana at the border.  This permit is good for as long as you keep your FM3 renewed.  I have not heard anything about a change in the law for bringing household goods in.  All information on the web still says you have 90 days from the time you get your FM3 to bring things in and it is a one time deal.  I certainly do not think you can bring more every year when you renew your visa.  Best thing to do here is talk to the consular officer at the nearest Mexican consulte.  If there are new rules for the FM3 , ask for   those in writing. You can bring clothes and personal items, few books, laptop, etc. in your vehicle without problems.  It is the furniture and big stuff that requires the menaje...and it is so expensive to bring that stuff, it is smart to think about just buyng new after you move.

  2. You have 90 days to use the 'menaje de casa' after you register your FM3 in Mexico that your received up north.  It is a one time import permit.

However it's very easy to bring normal small items in on additional trips

  3. I read that you can import a one time duty free shipment of used household items as long as it was within the first 6 months of getting your FM3. I've never seen any mention of an extension, though they may exist.

I haven't got that far myself so this is just what I've heard.
