On Canadian Hydographical charts for boaters, a few charts show a squiggly black line forming various shapes in very low water...what does this mean?

  1. It's where the water snakes are.

  2. Most maps and charts have a set of legends.  Often published separately from the map or chart.  It has a complete illustrated list of graphics and an explanation for each.  In this case your description could match several.  It may indicate a rocky shore that you can't land on without damaging the hull, or that a steep angle or cliff.  Or it could represent high and low water levels.  I hope this helps!  Good luck!

  3. Without seeing what you're looking at I don't want to hazard a guess, but here is the link to the Canadian Chart 1, where you will find your answer.

  4. Your squiggly black lines could indicate a mobile bottom ("sand waves"). Does this help, or are they not THAT kind of squiggly line???
