I go commando.  Just one less thing to wash.  One time I wore a thong as a joke.  I found board shorts bunch up in my groinal area underneath my wetsuit.  Which is very uncomfortable.

If I have privacy to change eg a tent, boat, or rv I generally wear nothing under a good 'suit, but having speedos or tight whities on (or handy) has saved me from many potentially embarrassing situations. YMMV.

Almost no reason to wear anything under a wet-suit, except maybe a rash guard, especially if you're just starting out.  You'll look like you're wearing a diaper if you have boardshorts underneath.  Plus boardshorts bunching up in a wetsuit ain't comfy.

Commando is the way to go.  If it's super-cold, then you should get a thicker wetsuit, and/or booties & gloves.  You can't wear two wetsuits at one time.  That's like wearing two condoms at a time.  It'll only damage the other, and hurt you.

Besides a rash guard, only women have to wear at least a bikini top in a wetsuit.  Anything else reeks of "kook".  You "might" be able to get away with wearing something like Under Armor style shorts underneath to prevent rash, but if you get a high quality wet suit, you usually don't have to worry about that.

I go commando most of the time.  If I am at a contest or somewhere else where I will be in and out of the water several times during the day i will wear board shorts under it.

if its cold im not goin commando im wearin two wetsuits if its moderate than ill go commando depending on how im fealing.

You have to go commando. Because your boxers get all scrunched up and it doesn't feel so good when they're up in a wad inside the wetsuit.

I've NEVER read or heard of a more stupid answer from a dumber individual then the moron who calls himself, "DaSurfMan". Nobody, I mean NOBODY wears TWO wetsuits. Ya, but "DaSurf Man" or "Guy" or whatever he calls himself does when he's "competing". What a kook. Don't listen to that guy. Anyone who REMOTELY has a clue about what they're doing in the water (surfing wise), is clowning that guy. Trust me, "DaSurfMan" wouldn't know what a d**n thruster was if someone put one in his hands. The answer after that barney's is absolutely dead on correct. I've been surfing for 22 years, and can't remember the last time I wore ANYTHING underneath my suit. If you get ball/groin rash, simply apply Vasoline to the affected area. Every surfer carries a small jar of Vasoline along with wax, fin keys, spare leashes, leash plug ties, quick fix ding repair kit, small first aid kit, more wax, wax comb/stripper, sunscreen, extra set of skegs, in their accessories tub.

well as its getting colder in the south west of england ive started keeping my calvin's on(boxers)if they ride up when you put your wetsuit on then just pull them down abit before you put your arms in the top part.i have a winter suit but its still quite chilly.an of course i use the flawless old surfers trick dont tell too many people but i also pee when its too cold in the suit it warms it up a treat!also you could get a thermo vest they arnt to pricey about £15-£50 then gloves and boots id suggest going for the spit toe style as there easier to use and you can feel the board under your feet better usually

that guy who says he wears two wet suits well i guess he doesnt actually surf because if he did then he would realise how hard it is to paddle with just one let alone two wetsuits on plus it would streatch the second suit and render it useless

My boyfriend goes commando and I wear a bikini top but nothing on the bottom cause I wouldn't want my bikini bottoms pinching my hip and ruining the view for my boyfriend.

All you need is a bath towel to change, Ive done it on the side of PCH before with nothing under my wetsuit...just practice at your house once or twice in front of a mirror if you want to figure out what to do, my boyfriend taught me the trick of getting it on your ankles and the grabbing the top of the legs and tugging up in one quick move and getting it on right quick.
