Living room can be translated "le salon", but the term

"salle de séjour" is more common now (in France anyway).  "Salon" is more for a formal living room.

It would be : que vas-tu acheter pour le salon? ( to a friend ) or qu'allez-vous acheter pour le salon ( formal )

Salle à manger is living room.

For the 1st part, kl is right, but I would translate living room by "salon", and dining room by "salle à manger"
