  1. There is no difference in the overall meaning except that the first one is with an article (L' = "the") and the second without. I suppose the one without the article (Atelier de Claude Monet) is on a sign or is a caption to a picture. You may drop articles when it is on a sign (in the street, in a museum, on a door). It would be the same in journalistic French, you would sometimes drop the article in a headline to go right to the point, or when answering the phone of a business, public place. For instance: if you are the receptionist at the Paris City Hall (l'hôtel de ville de Paris), you may pick up the phone and say "Hôtel de Ville de Paris".

Otherwise, in a sentence you absolutely need an article before a noun.

And yes, it means "Claude Monet's workshop", or literaly:

the(l') workshop (atelier) of (de) Claude Monet.

  2. There's very little difference and none in actual meaning.

"L'atelier de Claude Monet" means "The workshop of Claude Monet" and "Atelier de Claude Monet" means "Workshop of Claude Monet."

Its just a choice of whether to use the word "the" or not.

Its as if you call your dentist's office. They might answer the phone with "The office of Dr. Jones" or "Office of Dr. Jones." No real difference either way.

  3. l'atelier de... it's the translation of: "the workshop of..."

l'atelier means "le atelier" like "le chocolat" but in french you can't say "le atelier" or "le apelle"(the call) so you have to use" ' ", l'atelier, l'appelle etc...

"atelier de..." just means "workshop of..." this the same in english and in french....

  4. l'atelier means its HIS atelier, atelier just isn't specifying that it belongs to him. And an atelier is a workshop .
