FSV Mainz manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed his disappointment on the team’s performances against Schalke and Hannover. He stated that his side has lacked determination in the last two matches and will have to step up if they
have to challenge for honours in this campaign.
Die Nullfunfer currently sit in seventh place with seven points of the Bundesliga standings table. The club had a dream start to the season as they won the first two fixtures in the league to end up at the top but the following
two games have earned them just one point.
Tuchel claimed that Mainz played brilliantly in the first-half against Schalke and scored two goals but failed to capitalize on the lead and conceded four goals after the interval to end up on the losing side. He admitted that
there were some mistakes made and the team may have got complacent.
“The team's performance in terms of legwork and physical commitment was excellent in the first half, but it wasn't after the break. But there's no real point me naming one or two particular reasons, because there are certainly
more than that,” he was quoted as saying.
The tactician also commented on the Hannover draw two weeks earlier. He stated that Mainz started the game brilliantly with an early goal but again conceded because of a defensive error and were able to get only one point out of
the game.
The former SSV Ulm manager admitted that the players could have been tired due to the hectic international schedule but insisted that it should not be an excuse for the poor display.
“When you feel tired, you are tired. Whether that's down to the training or whether it's a feeling from within is something that varies from player to player. It doesn't happen to us very often, but it happens and you just have
to accept it,” he concluded.
FSV Mainz had a sensational season last term and ended in fifth place with 58 points. The club also made its way to the qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
