Question:

FTP or Notepad? Which is better?

Does it matter which one you use for your website? I'm trying to start a website but when I saved a page in FTP, it didn't look the way I wanted it to. When I saved it in Notepad, it looked the way I wanted it to.

So if it's okay to use Notepad, how would I publish it? Where in the host would I go? I just see options for FTP.

  1. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and its not an editor in itself. So I'm not sure what you mean about that paticuler question, but i can recommend that you continiue to use notepad, as hand-coding insures that the result is exactly as expected.

Another good editor would be Notepad++, this editor has support for syntax highlighting, along with tabbed editing. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/s...

You can "publish", or upload your files using FTP, for this you either need to use the filemaneger on your host (if any), or a FTP client like the free filezilla - http://filezilla-project.org/ or SmartFTP which comes as a free trial, SmartFTP - http://www.smartftp.com/ used to be free for non-commercial use, but is not free anymore.

If you are unsure about how to setup your client, then you should follow a tutorial: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&fkt=1...

But generally you would have received the FTP login information in your mail and/or e-mail from your host, after you signed up.

You will get a lot of answers containing hosting recommendations, usually from the ONE and single host which the answer ever tried, along with a bunch of spam.

I would recommend that you check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ where you can read about the many hosting solutions out there, covers anything from the free hosts to the dedicated hosting solutions.
