Fabian Cancellara enjoying his peak form just ahead of Milan-San Remo 2012
Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan has finally found the right form for the new season.
His recent performance at the final stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico was fair enough to answer all his critics.
He shined during the seventh stage of the race and crossed the finish-line in the fastest time of 10 minutes and 36 seconds.
Cancellara overcame Daniele Bennati, Cameron Meyer, Svein Tuft and Manuele Boaro to secure his second win of the season.
His first victory came during the 2012 Strade Bianche, where he out-sprinted Maxim Iglinskiy and Oscar Gatto after an impressive performance.
The Swiss is definitely enjoying his best form and is content to lead the team at the Milan-San Remo and the Paris-Roubaix.
He noted, "I know where my form is now after 30 hours on the bike and I have a lot of confidence. I’ll have a few days rest now and then Milan-San Remo on Saturday".
"I feel calm about the race. It’s a race where no one can predict what’s going to happen. I’ve won before in 2008 but I think that was a surprise and now everyone watches me so it isn’t so easy," he concluded.
Cancellara explained that he is not 100 % fit for the race but is optimistic to take on the biggest challenge of the season yet.
The 30-year-old had a terrific past season and filled his bag with a number of victories, including the first and the ninth stages of the Tour de Suisse.
He also grabbed stages at the Tour de Luxembourg, Tirreno-Adriatico and E3 Prijs Vlaanderen in the 2011 season.
Team RadioShack-Nissan is amongst the strongest sides and is definitely amongst the favourite to claim the top spot during the fourth World Tour race of the year.
It is currently holding the third overall spot after the 2012 UCI World Tour team’s rankings with a total number of 149 points.
Team Sky is leading the category with 207 points to its credit while Team Movistar is 15 points behind at the second position.
Team RadioShack-Nissan will also take full use of its star rider Daniele Bennati at the Milan-San Remo.
The race is scheduled on March 17th and the winner of the race will be awarded with 100 UCI points. The second and the third position holders will receive 80 and 70 points, respectively.
