Fabian Cancellara eyeing the London Olympics
Fabian Cancellara of Team RadioShack-Nissan announced its final goals for the 2012 season.
He was present at a press conference in Basel, Switzerland, and made full use of the media to broadcast his plans for the season ahead.
The cyclist has ruled the 2012 Olympic Games as the biggest goal of his season.
Fabian is currently recovering from a fractured collarbone sustained during the Tour of Flanders. “My next goal will then be in August with the London Olympics", he noted.
"I received a lot of support, a lot of text messages. Tom Boonen also sent me one, wishing me good recovery".
"He wrote that I should come back soon and meanwhile enjoy the time with my family".
The cyclist started his professional pursuit with Team Mapei-Quick Step in 2001 and spent a period of two years with the side.
He has also represented Team Fassa Bortolo (2003-2005), Team CSC (2006-2010) and finally joined Team Leopard Trek for the 2011 season.
The 31-year-old helped the team with several victories in 2011, and is determined to continue his supreme form in the current season.
He achieved the 12th overall spot at the UCI Elite Men Overall rankings 2011, with a total number of 252 points under his belt.
The Swiss also holds as many as five Gold, one Silver and two Bronze medals in his bag.
Fabian finished 32 points behind his team-mate Frank Schleck while Andy Schleck finished one position behind at the 12th spot.
The cyclist achieved a total number of 7 Tour de France and 4 Vuelta a Espana stages under his belt.
Cancellara grabbed his first 2012 victory during the Strade Bianche and also succeeded in the seventh stage of the race at Tirreno-Adriatico.
He rode brilliantly at the Milan-San Remo but had no answer to the magical form of Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge.
Fabian and his wife are expecting their second child by this summer as publicised by the cyclist himself.
"I actually wanted to make this news public after a victory in the Tour of Flanders, but given the changed circumstances I'll say it anyway: we are expecting a second child".
“I'm certainly going to recover for another week or ten days now”.
The cyclist will mark his return in May and will be seen in action in the Tour of Bavaria, scheduled from May 22-27.
