Fabian Cancellara left Vuelta a Espana to fine tune World Championships training – Cycling News
Leopard Trek rider Fabian Cancellara has withdrawn from Vuelta a Espana and has flown back to Switzerland for the final World Championships training. Cancellara believes that he needs some rest to get his energy back before the mega event as he left the
Vuelta after stage 16.
The 30-year-old participated in the Tour de France and came back to Spain to help Daniele Bennati, Jakob Fuglsang and Maxime Monfort. He mentioned that to produce good results in the World Championships he should take some rest as he said, “I need to take
some rest now and then pick up training again. I’m heading home to finish things off.”
Leopard Trek rider holds the honour of winning the world time trial titles four times and is fully determined to defend his title by winning the event a fifth time as he stated, “I think a reigning world champion should always defend their jersey, so I’m
going to try to win the time trial for the fifth time.”
He briefed that none of the stages at the Vuelta were longer than five hours and he needs that sort of practice before the world’s event. Cancellara is also looking ahead to represent Switzerland at the London Olympics as he stated, “I was originally going
to just ride the time but I’ve realised I can’t miss the world championships, It’ll also be an important test for the London Olympics next year.”
Fabian Cancellara is amongst the strong line up for the new RadioShack-Nissan-Trek team and has not commented about the merger of the two teams as the World Championships is the prime target and the main focus of his attention at the moment.
Cancellara announced that he will pull himself out of the tour after the 180 kilometre stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana 2011 because he needs some final preparations for the World Championships. He finished stage 16 at the 80th position as Juan
Jose Haedo of Saxo Bank won the race with Alessandro Petacchi at second and Daniele Bennati at third position. Cancellara was at 135th position after stage 16 general classifications at the Vuelta a Espana 2011.
