Fabian Cancellara recovering after the Tour of Flanders crash
Fabian Cancellara broke his collarbone during a crash at the Tour of Flanders 2012 and the cyclist has not fully recovered from the injury yet.
The Swiss professional cyclist briefed that the injury is taking longer than expected and he is desperate to get back on his bike as soon as possible.
Fabian told Het Laatste Nieuws, “It took a long time, longer than I had hoped and longer than anyone had expected".
“I’ve only been back on the road for a few days and it’s still a strange feeling”.
The 31-year-old registered his first victory of the 2012 season at the Strade Bianche.
He claimed the first position at the 7th stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico and finished second at the Milan-San Remo 2012.
Cancellara was going along the right path of success but the crash ruined his perfect start to the 2012 season.
Fabian was immediately transported to the hospital after the crash and the surgery was completed successfully.
However, the lack of activity has destroyed his shoulder muscles and the cyclist is currently working really hard to rebuild his previous strength.
The Swiss explained, “The broken collarbone was one thing, but the damage around it was greater than expected. The shoulder, ligaments, muscles, everything was lost”.
“The pain quickly disappeared, and within a week I was off medication. Everything was going well, but then I began to feel something in my shoulder”.
“On Monday, I had another scan done, and they found a tear in a ligament”, he concluded.
The 31-year-old started riding professionally with Team Mapei-Quick Step in 2001 and stayed with the team by the end of 2002 season.
He also represented Team Fassa Bortolo (2003-2005), Team CSC (2006-2010) and finally accepted an offer from Team Leopard Trek for 2011 season.
Fabian has filled his bag with several victories throughout the season and will miss the opportunity to ride the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
He will now be seen in action at the Tour of Bavaria scheduled from may 22-27 and will build up on his form ahead of the 2012 London Olympics which is the biggest goal of his 2012 season.
