Fabian Cancellara to change his racing calendar for improved results
While looking back at his 2012 campaign, Fabian Cancellara has decided to keep things simple for the season ahead and will focus at relatively less-tiring races like Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix instead of the Tour de France 2013.
After having some of the terrific past seasons, Cancellara’s 2012 season was rather disappointing, both for himself and Team RadioShack-Nissan management.
The cyclist earlier decided to end his associations with the Luxembourg team and was interested in finding a new home for his 2012 season.
However, the cyclist is optimistic to find the right form for the season ahead and will continue his professional crusade with the Luxembourg team after he first joined the team back in 2012.
He started riding professionally with Team Mapei-Quick Step back in 2001 and stayed with the team by the end of 2002 season.
Cancellara signed a three-year deal with Team Fassa Bortolo through 2003-05 and also represented Team CSC (2006-10) and Team Leopard Trek in 2011.
Team Leopard Trek and Team RadioShack-Nissan announced their merger after the end of 2011 season to form Team RadioShack-Nissan for 2012 season.
The top cyclists from both the teams were picked to form one of the strongest World Tour side and Cancellara made it through to the team’s final squad.
While commenting on his plans for the 2013 season, he told Het Nieuwsblad, “I want to be a rider again next season.  Back to basics”.
“In the first place I am going for Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.  The Tour... I think I could even skip it”.
“I don't want to be like Wiggins and Jurgen Van den Broeck and sacrifice everything for the Tour,” he said.
“I even think that I could skip the next Tour, especially now that here is no prologue”.
“What do I have to prove? Perhaps it is more interesting to take a break then to prepare for the second part of the season,” he concluded.
Fabian’s 2012 performances include a first place finish at the Swiss National Time Trial Championships, Strade Bianche and the opening prologue stage of the Tour de France 2012.
He succeeded during the Individual Time Trial stage 7 of the Tirreno-Adriatico and finished second at the Milan-San Remo 2012.
Only time will tell if Cancellara managed to find the right momentum for the coming season as he is really confident about his new racing plan.
