Fabien Verseille, Steven Finitsis move into the 1st round – London Open 2011
French Fabien Verseille defeated the English Ben Ford in the final qualifying round of the Coronation London Open 2011.
The event was a PSA World Tour Challenger 15 and is in its fourth year at the Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club in London, Great Britain. It took the Frenchman only fifty three minutes to get the best of the Englishman with a score of 11-5, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10.
During the first two rounds of the match Verseille served and in the first round he rallied much better than his opponent. With rail shots with an attack boast method led his opponent flabbergasted and Ford was unable to squander points. Nonetheless he managed
to get five points.
However, in the second round Ford had picked up and it was a good competition between the two as they matched an eye for an eye. Both the players were constantly bagging their service points but after the eighth point Ford nosedived and stumbled a bit which
made him lose the second set.
During the third set Ford had initiated the game and he got off to a great start as he held his serves. He took the lead for the first time and played some advance shots that further extended his lead. On the contrary, Verseille was unable to make an impactful
return and eventually lost the set with a 6-11 score.
The fourth set was extremely competitive as the two kept matching a blow for a blow and the score kept progressing on even terms. However, the last time the score tied was at ten points each, from there onwards; Verseille squandered two successive games
and sealed his victory of the set and the match. He will now be facing fourth seeded Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad.
Later during the day, Australian Steven Finitsis beat Pakistani Danish Atlas Khan in just thirty seven minutes of play with a score of 7-11, 11-6, 11-2, 4-0 ret. Although, Khan was losing he still tried his best but it was unfortunate as he pulled a muscle
and eventually had to retire.
Nonetheless, both the players had two extremely different styles of technique but the Australian was a better player than the Pakistani and he ultimately bagged three games to secure a berth for himself in the next round and will be facing Englishman Chris
Simpson.
