Fabio Capello promises England 'Clear out'
After England’s abysmal world cup campaign, Fabio Capello’s job was under threat. There were calls from all over the typical English media that asked for his dismissal as the English national team’s manager.
England lost their knockout round of sixteen match against Germany by 4 goals to 1, a match in which many thought that the team lacked cohesion, courage and character. Although most of the blame was attributed to Fabio Capello for his out-dated tactics and the system that he employed with England, players also took some of the blame for their lackluster performances after having considerably bright seasons with their respective clubs in the English Premier League.
Capello has now been given a vote of confidence by the English football association who say that they will retain the Italian manager till the European Championships which take place in 2012. For a lot of the players that featured in the English squad, the FIFA World Cup of 2010 might be the last ever world cup they play in for England.
However most of these players will be looking to bounce back and establish their place in the starting line up again for the UEFA Euro 2010 qualifications that are about to begin shortly.
Capello on the other hand has different ideas; the squad which went to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa was the oldest age-wise squad in the tournament, even older than the likes of Italy and France, Capello has recognized his mistake and is now looking to bring some changes.
Capello told the press that “this will be an end for some”, which means that positions of players such as Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Lampard and David James will be under threat. One can also include John Terry in that list after the Chelsea captain had a terrible world cup performance.
Fabio revealed that the Chairman of Club England, Dave Richards asked Fabio to consider some new players who are younger than the current lot. He also said that Adam Johnson and Joe Hart might be brought into the first team in the near future.
A source close to Capello is quoted in the newspaper 'the mail', as saying that Capello found it very disappointing that the players should courage during the qualifiers but failed to show the same amount during the World Cup.
The source also said that Capello thinks that there was a lack of character in some players who were playing for England during the World Cup. This attitude has let down Capello in the eyes of F.A and the English fans. The source has also stated that Capello will make sure this never happens again, and also that the amount of changes that will come about might surprise some.
There are some interesting youngsters that are currently coming up through the English ranks. Jack Rodwell who plays for Everton in the English Premier League has already been touted as a future England captain by some who rate the player very highly.
Adam Johnson who plays for Manchester City has also impressed while Arsenal’s Jack Wilshire and Kieran Gibbs have also been in spotlight to succeed the likes of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole in the England set up.
Chris Smalling who has been signed up by Manchester United recently is also an upcoming central defender. His performances for Fulham last season have been brilliant and Capello will be looking to integrate him into the England system sooner rather than later.
England won their last World Cup in the year 1966, when the FIFA World Cup was hosted by the English and the final took place in the old Wembley stadium. Despite putting in some excellent performances during the World Cup qualification campaign, England failed miserably in the FIFA World Cup finals.
