Fabio Capello puts his faith in Wayne Rooney
England National squad manager Fabio Capello has claimed that Wayne Rooney will be hugely influential in England’s friendly match against Denmark on Wednesday, 9th February.
Since returning from an ankle injury last year, Rooney has been a shadow of his former self. The Manchester United striker has been struggling to find the back of the net this season, scoring just five goals in all competitions since
the start of the 2010-11 campaign. Part of his dismal form can be attributed to his injury problems, but most of the blame falls to Rooney’s off-field problems.
The striker became public enemy number one amongst Manchester United supporters when it emerged that he wanted to leave the club. Rooney then found himself in more trouble after he was accused of adultery. The incident has taken its
toll on the England international, and he has since shown very little signs of the brilliance he is capable of.
Rooney produced some dismal performances during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The striker failed to score even once in the tournament, and England were ultimately eliminated from the competition by bitter rivals Germany.
However, Capello believes that Rooney is slowly regaining his form. The England manager said, “He's (Wayne Rooney) suffered ankle problems but, in terms of assists, he has had 12 and scored two goals last week. (Manchester United manager) Sir Alex Ferguson
said he was really happy with Rooney's performances this season.”
The Italian went on to add that the Wayne Rooney’s presence in the England squad is very important, especially since the Three Lions will be without the services of Steven Gerrard in midfield.
Capello said, “He scored twice against Aston Villa (in the Barclays Premier League) and that was really good for him. Rooney is really important."
The England manager also has to deal with the absence of Rio Ferdinand, which forced him to award the captain’s armband to Frank Lampard. Meanwhile Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will be making his first start in an England shirt on
Wednesday.
