Fabio Capello urged to think carefully over Andy Carroll call-up
Former Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder has pleaded with England national team coach Fabio Capello to think carefully over whether to give Newcastle forward Andy Carroll his first senior cap.
Carroll has enjoyed an impressive season with his club after helping them to gain promotion back to the English Premier League at the first time of asking.
He has scored six goals in eleven league games this term — including a hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa as well as the only goal in the victory over EPL giants Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, 7 November — leading to him being widely tipped
for a call-up to the England squad to face France in a friendly on Wednesday, 17 November.
Controversial private life
However, as impressive as his performances have been on the pitch, Carroll has caused controversy in his private life.
The 21-year-old was told to live with his club captain Kevin Nolan as part of bail conditions after being charged with assault. He also admitted a previous assault charge following an incident at a nightclub in Newcastle and was fined £1,000.
As a result, Roeder has claimed that the young attacker will not reach his full potential until he improves his attitude off the pitch.
Roeder — who was in charge of the magpies between 2006 and 2007 — told the BBC that: "I'd select him but I'm not saying he should play. I'm not certain he's sending out great signals to young players. If he is picked the signals for me would be 'I can do what
I want it doesn't matter, as long as I play well I've got a chance to play for England'. The standards should be much higher than that.
"He's a great lad around the training ground, coaches love working with him, but by living the way he is he's not fulfilling the potential that he could possibly fulfill by having just a bit of a quieter life."
