The Portuguese international was dropped from Real Madrid squad against Villarreal and explained his actions as he prepares for La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad.
Despite succumbing to a 1-1 draw against Malaga at the Bernabeu, Jose Mourinho dropped compatriot http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Coentrao from the squad to face Villarreal.
It was later revealed that the Portuguese international did not make the starting eleven or the bench due to his off-field antics on his birthday, caught smoking outside a restaurant.
After media outcry, the former Benfica player defended himself as he responded to the criticism levied on him. Coentrao insisted that he is not a habitual smoker and the pictures showing him puffing on a cigarette were taken during a rare occasion.
Continuing on the subject, the 24-year-old wing-back criticised media personnel for portraying a negative image of his. Coentrao added that he is a professional who knows his limits and has always given a good account of himself.
"It was my birthday and it was an occasional thing. I am very disappointed with what has been written in the press because no one can say anything bad about me."
"I am an excellent professional, I have always given everything for the clubs I have represented and it is not fair to put everything in doubt because of one isolated act.”
Coentrao also clarified the rumour regarding a scene outside his home while celebrating his birthday, claiming that nothing of that sort happened that night.
"Besides, it was reported that I had made a lot of noise in my house on that night and that is a complete lie," Coentrao said to Record.
Following his explanation, the 30 million Euro signing has been recalled to first team duties as Real Madrid welcome Real Sociedad to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Portuguese defender will need to give a good account of his abilities on the night as the Capital club look for maximum points against La Liga strugglers.
With a trip to the Camp Nou scheduled at the end of April, Los Blancos cannot afford to drop more points.
