Fabio Fognini breaks down Daniel Gimeno in opening round match –Valencia Open 2011
Fabio Fognini, Italian world No.44, bulldozed his opening round competitor of 2011 Valencia Open 500, Daniel Gimeno, Spanish world No.94, ousting him in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, in an hour and 10 minutes blue indoor circuit fixture
on Monday, 31st October, at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia, Spain.
Rolling down with their rivalry, Fognini kept the upper hand storming out yet another match against the Spaniard. Playing their sixth head-to-head match, the Italian 24-year-old bagged his fifth win to lead the derby 5-1.
Nevertheless, continuing with the match, the Italian world No.44 fired up the first set serving out the opening game, 1-0. Gimeno, 26-year-old, covered up the lead right away bagging game two, 1-1, and stood to return again. Fognini
rushed away winning game three, yet could not break to extend his lead, 2-1.
Cutting down to level again, Spaniard pocketed game four, 2-2, and switched the serve. Pressurising his counterpart, the Italian served out the fifth game, 3-2, and broke the Spaniard in the sixth to lead the set, 4-2. Left behind
with just two more wins, Fognini served out game seven extending his lead to 5-2.
Gimeno, serving out game eight, 5-3, and broke the higher ranked Italian in game nine to cut the lead down to 4-5. Hoping to level up the scores, world No.94 broke down, double set point for the Italian, in game ten loosing the
game and the set, 6-4.
Continuing with set two, Fognini commanded the set start serving out the first game with a double game point winner, 1-1. Gimeno replied with similar win and levelled up the scores, 1-1. Italian world No.44 put a two games lead
in front as he served out game three and broke the lower ranked Spaniard in game four, 3-1.
However, Gimeno pulled right back up as he broke back in game five and served out game six to level up the scores at 3-3. Striking back with the reply, Fognini served out game seven and surprised the Spaniard breaking him down
next, 5-3. With just one more game left behind to captivate the match, Fognini hammered game nine finishing off the set, 6-3, and the match in straight easy sets.
Making his way into the second stage of the ATP World Tour 500 event, the Italian world No.44 now goes on to play against the winner of the match between Argentine, Juan Monaco and the fourth seeded, Nicolas Almagro, to battle
out the quarter-final spot.
