Fabio Fognini breezes past Victor Crivoi into third round – German Tennis Championships 2011
In another second round match in Hamburg at the bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships 2011, Fabio Fognini predictably breezed past his opponent, the Romanian Victor Crivoi. The scores at play’s end settled at 6-1,
7-5 squarely in Fognini’s favour, who now moves on to the top 16 round at the tournament. The match lasted for one hour and twenty minutes.
World No. 38, Italian Fognini had earlier in the tournament received a bye to the second round on account of his fifteenth seed position. Fognini made a convincing entry into the tournament by swiftly dismissing his opponent
with effortless skill. Prior to coming to Hamburg, Fognini had made an appearance at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart. He had lost to Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-7(5), 4-6 in his second round match.
Victor Crivoi has been in good form this season and he had earlier made a spectacular entry into the main draws in Hamburg by winning against fellow qualifier Guillermo Olaso. He too had featured in Stuttgart as a qualifier but
had failed to make it past the first round match. Crivoi had lost 2-6, 1-6 to Spaniard Pablo Andujar.
Tuesday’s match was the first meeting between the two players.
Crivoi opened the match by serving the first game of the match but was abruptly cut short by Fognini who scored a decisive serve break. Fognini continued the beating by registering another successfully converted serve
break in the third game, limiting Crivoi to 30 hard earned points. The set continued with Fognini firmly set in an unbreakable lead and Crivoi managed to bag only a single game to his credit in the fifth game of the set. Fognini served fluidly at 75% and successfully
won 10 of his 12 points on serve. Despite serving fairly well, Crivoi’s inability to successfully win second serve points cost him the set. Fognini closed the deal with glitzy skill by scoring another breakpoint. The scoreboard at the set’s end stood at 6-1.
The second set remained more closely contested, with Crivoi trying hard to breakthrough Fognini’s shackles. Both the players recorded two serve breaks each to take the set gradually to the 5-5 mark. However Fognini again
powered through at the very end and guaranteed himself a 7-5 victory by breaking the 12th game of the set. Fognini managed a total of 45 points of which 24 came from serves and 21 from serves. On the contrary, Crivoi had only
managed to close the set with a total of 35 points.
The fifteenth seed Italian is now in the top 16 and will play his third round match against either second seed Austrian Jurgen Melzer or Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver. The two will play their match on Wednesday.
